The University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking to fill the position of Medical Office Specialist for the College of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology. Under the general supervision of the Clinic Director, the Medical Office Specialist provides patients, physicians, physician assistants, and staff with a broad range of clerical services at the Department of Otolaryngology.

  • Enters patients in the appropriate databases and scheduling systems
  • Confirms patient appointments and enters them in the appropriate electronic record systems
  • Coordinates with external referring entities and other internal clinics regarding patient scheduling.
  • Maintains medical office databases and creates reports as needed.
  • Responds to patient inquiries and relays information the appropriate clinical staff.
  • Oversees reception area and ensures supplies are replenished.
  • Performs associated clerical tasks, as needed.
  • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS :

1. High school diploma or equivalent/GED

2. Any one or any combination of the following, totaling two (2) years (24 months), from the categories below:

a) work experience comparable to that performed at the Medical Office Associate level or in other positions of comparable responsibility

b) college education with coursework in a medical or para-medical field (such as nursing assistant, medical assistant or medical secretary) and/or business field (such as business, finance, computer science, public administration, or social science)

  •   30 semester hours equals 6 months 
  • 60 semester hours equals 1 year (12 months) 
  • 90 semester hours equals 2 years (24 months)

and work experience in a medical or para-medical fields (such as nursing assistant, medical assistant or medical secretary)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Three (3) or more years of experience performing the above listed duties in an academic medical clinic setting. 
  2. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  3. Ability to maintain confidentiality. 
  4. Ability to interact tactfully with the public, including a diverse population
