The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at University of Illinois at Chicago in the College of Dentistry is seeking a qualified candidate for a full-time faculty at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor or higher on the non-tenure track with a specialty in Dental Anesthesiology. The Department is responsible for the didactic and clinical instruction in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Local Anesthesia and Pain Control for the undergraduate dental students, and has a full- and expanded-scope postgraduate residency training program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.  The Department is fully committed to patient care, student and resident education, service to the University, the community, and the profession, continuing dental and medical education, and scientific research and publication.

The department seeks individuals with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary care and willingness to engage other academic departments such as Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Endodontics, etc.

Program Curriculum

• Provides anesthesia support to various Departments in the College of Dentistry.
• Assists in the development and implementation of didactic courses in anesthesiology and pharmacology, as well as other related topics, at the pre-doctoral and postgraduate levels.
• Provides consideration towards the development of a CODA-approved Dental Anesthesiology residency training program at the UIC College of Dentistry.
• Collaborate with faculty in various Departments in the Colleges of Dentistry and Medicine and other health sciences colleges in interdisciplinary basic and clinical research endeavors.
• Act as a mentor to dental students and postgraduate residents regarding research and scholarly activity; this may include serving as PI or co-PI on various internal and external grant applications; this may also include serving as a mentor or on various thesis committees (e.g. M.S. degree in Oral Sciences).
• Participates in continuing education offerings of the College of Dentistry.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Provides anesthesia support and clinical anesthesia services for direct patient care to various Departments in the College of Dentistry.
• May pursue a dual appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Illinois, College of Medicine (upon approval of the Department Head).

Didactic Responsibilities

• Serve as Course Director of postgraduate and pre-doctoral courses in anesthesiology, pharmacology, and pain and anxiety control.
• Provide didactic instruction to the post-graduate programs including Periodontics, Endodontics, Prosthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry residents in the areas of pharmacology, anesthesiology, emergency simulation, and pain and anxiety control. 
• Provide didactic and clinical instruction to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents in the outpatient setting as part of resident clinical rotations.

Administration

• Evaluate and document student and resident performance (didactic and clinical).
• Provide periodic Morbidity and Mortality data.
• Participate in scholarly activity including basic and/or clinical research and publication.
• Meet with Department Head regularly to discuss program issues/concerns.
• Oversee resident anesthesia case assignment/ distribution.
• Maintain responsibility for the quality and continuity of patient care with regards to anesthesia services.
• Assist various Departments in meeting CODA accreditation standards and participate in preparation of CODA documentation.

 

Qualifications include a DDS/DMD degree, and current dental license and be eligible for Illinois dental licensure. Completion of advanced education in a CODA-accredited Dental Anesthesiology Program for at least two years required. An advanced degree (MS or PhD) in an area related to anesthesiology or Diplomat status by the American Board of Dental  Anesthesiology is preferred. Extensive experience in providing sedation and general anesthesia for a variety of full-scope dental and oral surgical and head and neck procedures for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients, including ambulatory, non-hospital based orthognathic surgery and reconstruction, and aesthetic facial surgery required. Must be eligible for the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor level (minimum) in the non-tenure track rank commensurate with norms and criteria for faculty.
