The School of Theater & Music (STM) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a full-time tenure or clinical track faculty position, beginning in August 2018. The School seeks a jazz educator and musician to work with students and faculty from diverse backgrounds and participate in the vibrant Chicago arts community.

This position’s responsibilities include teaching at the undergraduate level, developing and maintaining a strong performance career at the regional and national levels, and engaging in service activities within the department and university. The successful candidate will direct and coordinate all aspects of the Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies degree program including responsibility for: curriculum oversight, student recruitment and retention, ensemble assignments, performance scheduling, coordination of juries and program budget. Teaching responsibilities will be appropriate to qualifications and the needs of the unit and may include applied lessons, ensemble directing, courses such as improvisation, jazz history, jazz arranging, and jazz fundamentals. 

 

Minimum qualifications include a master’s degree or equivalent in music; proven record of success as an administrator; strong teaching skills with at least three years of experience teaching at the college level; demonstrated ability to teach private lessons and lead jazz ensembles; evidence of (or the potential for) an active performance career at the national level.

Preferred qualifications include a doctorate; demonstrated ability to direct a Jazz Studies program; accomplishment in the areas of jazz composing/arranging, and/or scholarship; an established profile as a recording artist.

UIC is a Carnegie Research 1 university that enrolls over 30,000 students on a 240-acre site one mile west of Chicago’s Loop. The School of Theatre & Music provides innovative, rigorous, and comprehensive academic and performance programs to a highly diverse student body. One of four units in the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts, STM enrolls about 90 undergraduate majors in music programs and about 120 undergraduate majors in theatre. The faculty consists of performing artists and scholars. There are 25 full-time faculty and about 40 part-time faculty. The School offers coursework leading to a BA in Music, BA in Music Business, BM in Music Performance, BM in Jazz Studies, BFA in Acting, BA in Theatre and Performance, and BA in Theatre Design, Production, and Technology. Music ensembles include choirs, concert bands, jazz ensembles, orchestra, athletic band, chamber groups, jazz combos, among others. For more information, go to http://theatreandmusic.uic.edu/.
