The College of Dentistry at the University of Illinois at Chicago has an immediate need for reliable, enthusiastic, self-starting dental assistant IIs who enjoy working in a diverse, clinical/teaching environment.

Dental Clinics Currently Recruiting:

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Ideal candidates will have surgical experience including monitoring patients during moderate sedation, local anesthesia and nitrous oxide procedures. Preferred qualifications include certification in Anesthesia Assistant Monitoring (or the ability to obtain certification within six months of hire), experience with airway management (with/without monitoring equipment), and flexibility to adjust to various dental providers preferences for dental instruments and procedures. 

Orthodontics
Ideal candidates will be able to perform simple orthodontic procedures such as regular banding and bonding; manipulating dental materials; and retracting and evacuating oral cavity. Preferred qualifications include experience in orthodontic assisting, techniques in bonding, and placing and removing arch wires.

Pediatric Dentistry
Ideal candidates will be able to take radiographs, take and pour impressions, and have nitrous oxide and sedation experience. Preferred qualifications include operating room experience, working with children and/or special needs patients, and the ability to speak and write English and Spanish.

Pre-Doctoral Group Practice
Ideal candidates will have knowledge of OSHA requirements, experience chair-side assistance during treatment, sterilization, and inventory control.  Experience with reporting on malfunctioning operatory or x-ray equipment to appropriate personnel and identifying and reporting general maintenance problems in the clinic.

 

 

  • provides assistance during dental procedures by transferring instruments, manipulating dental materials, retracting and evacuating oral cavity, and assisting with sedations.
  • arranges equipment, pre-tray setups, dental materials and supplies, and patients’ records.
  • reports on malfunctioning operatory or x-ray equipment to appropriate personnel; helps identify and report general maintenance problems in the clinic.
  • assists supervisor in the ordering, stocking, inventorying and distribution of supplies and equipment; ensures supplies and equipment are clean and put away after use.
  • instructs dental students in utilization of services of dental assistants.
  • exposes digital and film-based dental radiographs under the direction of a dentist or dental X-ray technician, demonstrating all radiographic techniques and radiation protection.
  • instructs dental assistant students in the techniques, theory, and practice of dental assisting.
  • instructs patients in proper oral hygiene, as directed.
  • prepares, organizes, and packs instruments and supplies.
  • communicates directly with patients as guided by the student or instructors/faculty; communicates in an appropriate and positive manner to guide and re-assure patients, as well as support the patient care mission of the institution.
  • cleans and sterilizes all supplies, instruments, and placing disposable barriers on equipment required for patient treatment based on facility protocol.
  • takes, pours, trims, and polishes study casts and models.
  • performs duties comparable to those associated with the next lower level in this series and other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

1. High school graduate or equivalent
2. Any one or any combination of the following, totaling Two years (24 months) of experience in the categories below:

a. Work experience in dental assisting comparable to that performed at the Dental Assistant I level of this series https://www.sucss.illinois.gov/documents/ClassSpecs/htm/spec0197.htm

b. Graduation from an accredited dental assisting school (must upload transcripts)

OR

c. Current Certification as a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) by the Dental Assisting National Board, if required by the employing institution (must upload certificate)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual Language Skills - The ability to read, write, and verbally communicate in both English and Spanish.
  • Experience working with children and/or special needs patients.
  • Certification as a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) by the Dental Assisting National Board
  • Operating Room experience
