This position is located at the Rockford campus which is 90 miles northwest of the Chicago campus.

The University of Illinois Rockford is seeking Certified Professional Coders to join our medical billing team.  The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge of 95/97 billing guidelines and Medicare/Medicaid billing rules.  Duties include responsibility for reviewing documentation and coding patient records using ICD 10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes. 

  • Reviews patient medical records to assign codes for diagnoses, treatments, surgical procedures, and non surgical procedures for professional services.  Standard coding principles will be used such as ICD- IO-CM, HCPCS and CPT.
  • Review and assign appropriate evaluation/management levels for professional services.
  • Ensures all services documented in the patient’s chart are coded appropriately.  When services are not documented appropriately, coder seeks to attain proper documentation in a timely manner.
  • Prepare billing visit slips, physician hospital charge slips, nursing home charge slips for all clinical patient care activities for UICOM-R in a timely manner.  When assigned, key associated charges into the electronic billing system.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of standard “Explanation of Benefits” terminology and work assigned Denial Claims in a timely manner.
  • Maintains an ongoing and accurate record of incomplete or missing documentation and encounter forms to insure all billings are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Maintains and reports weekly productivity to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Work within the established standards for productivity and accuracy.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of all coding principles, governmental regulations, protocols and third party requirements pertaining to coding and billing.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

1.  High school graduation or equivalent.

2. Any one or any combination totaling 18 months from the following categories:

A.            Work experience in a healthcare setting (i.e. hospital, physician’s office, nursing home, billing agency) utilizing ICD-9, ICD-10 and CPT coding systems, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) and the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) systems of coding to assign codes for services provided to patients.

B.            College course work relating to healthcare operations that includes the following topics such as: Medical Terminology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, ICD-9, ICD-10 Coding and CPT Coding, or closely related courses.

·         6 semester hours equals 6 months

·         12 semester hours equals 12 months

·         18 semester hours equals 18 months

NOTE:          Current designation as Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A), Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or a Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) by the American Academy of Professional Codes (AAPC) (formerly CPC-H certification) or current certification as a Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician based (CCS-P) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) satisfies all the requirements for this classification.

Credential Assessment Exam Scoring Information:

You will not be required to report in person for this exam. The updated online application and all uploaded, relevant documents, such as a resume and/or college transcript will be used in the calculation of the exam score. These documents should be uploaded prior to submitting your exam request.
