Job Description – Assistant Director, Campus Learning Environments   

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is the city’s largest research university with an operating budget of $2.0 billion, serves over 29,000 students, comprising one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation, with 15 colleges and over 10,000 faculty and staff. 

 

The Office of Campus Learning Environments (OCLE) at UIC oversees the planning, design and evaluation of all the general-use classrooms and student lounges on campus. The charge of the OCLE is to enhance the physical environment in order to support excellence in teaching and learning.

 

Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Learning Environments & Campus Architect, the Assistant Director provides conceptual and interior space design for campus classrooms and informal learning spaces, called Oases.  The position assists with strategic planning and goal setting, policy development and implementation for the learning space program.  The Assistant Director is responsible for physical space design, interior finish design, furniture and art selection, fundraising, marketing and communications and leading vendor teams.  This is part-time working 24 hours a week with benefits.  

Job Responsibilities

Learning Space Design

  • Assist and advise Associate Vice Chancellor Learning Environments & Campus Architect on strategic planning relating to needs assessment and identifying future learning space projects.
  • Develop and implement usage policy for informal learning spaces, named Oases, including restrictions for students, faculty, staff and external organizations, and appropriate to donors’ intentions.
  • Provide design direction and conceptual design for classrooms and Oases.
  • Select and procure furniture, digital or other art work, and select finishes for ceilings, walls, and floors in Oasis and classrooms.
  • Coordinate project plan, development and implementation with professional service consultants.
  • Conduct semi-annual inspection of all student Oases, in 16 buildings across campus, per regulatory and donor requirements
  • Assess faculty and student satisfaction and engagement in Oases, and identify areas for improvement.

Marketing, Communications and Fundraising

  • Support the UIC Office of Advancement on gift development from alumni to develop new Oases.
  • Market and promote the unit’s work to campus community.  Communicate the benefits of unit’s projects to students, faculty and administrators. 
  • Design, create and manage Office of Campus Learning Environments’ website.

Lead Teams

  • Lead vendor teams: coordinate the work of vendors to ensure that group objectives are met.

Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Job Knowledge & Skills, Education, Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design, Graphic Design or related field is required.

A minimum of three years of directly related experience is required; experience with educational facility design is preferred.

Strong presentation, interpersonal, verbal and written communication and project management skills are required.

Working Conditions

General office environment. Regular travel not expected but may occur occasionally around

previously scheduled events. Requires sitting for extended periods of time, standing, visual acumen, manual dexterity and fingering for working with computer key boards.

Requires climbing up and down stairs in buildings without elevators to perform inspection of Oases in 16 buildings.
