The University Library of the University of Illinois at Chicago seeks an energetic and knowledgeable librarian to lead our reconfigured Circulation Department.  The Circulation Department manages circulation operations, entry desks, overnight services, course reserves, and interlibrary loan for the Richard J. Daley Library.

The Circulation Librarian will provide strategic leadership and management of the department (currently 20 FTE staff positions and numerous student employees).  He/she will be a vital part of the Library’s management team and will work with colleagues throughout the library to provide excellent services to our students, faculty, and staff.

The University Library

The University Library at the University of Illinois at Chicago supports the teaching, research and service mission of the university.  It serves an urban campus of more than 29,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff as well as the Chicago metropolitan area and the State of Illinois.  The Library is part of the statewide CARLI consortial integrated library system. 

The Richard J. Daley Library serves as the main library on the east side of the UIC campus.  Collections cover the arts, humanities, sciences, social sciences, and engineering. 

  • Provide strategic leadership to the Circulation department, including setting, implementing and assessing goals and objectives for the department
  • Provide oversight and expertise relating to circulation of library materials, processing and handling of reserve requests, interlibrary loan, overnight building management, and other circulation activities
  • Hire, train, and supervise departmental personnel and lead them in providing quality services to users
  • Serve as a member of the Library's management team
  • Monitor operations related to building security and maintenance, including coordination with Library and Security staff in emergency situations
  • Promote and advance UIC’s participation in resource sharing consortia such as CARLI and GWLA to maximize the benefits to the UIC community
  • Play a leadership role in collaborative development of library policies and procedures, coordinating with staff at Library of the Health Sciences sites
  • Master’s degree in Library Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible professional experience
  • Evidence of successful supervision of faculty and/or staff
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to work effectively with Library and campus colleagues
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusiveness in the Library and the academic community
  • Strong organizational, leadership and relationship building skills
  • Keen analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to meet University standards in research, publication and professional service commensurate with appointment as a clinical faculty member

ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Work experience in an academic library
  • Experience managing library circulation functions using an integrated library system

SALARY/RANK/CONTRACT:

Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience. The minimum salary is $60,000.  This is a twelve month clinical faculty appointment; 24 days of vacation; 12 days annual sick leave with additional disability benefits; 11 paid holidays; medical and dental insurance (with employee contribution); participation in one of the retirement options of the Illinois State Universities Retirement System compulsory.  For further description of benefits see https://nessie.uihr.uillinois.edu/cf/benefits/
