Assistant Professor--Diaspora: Exile, Conflict & Security--Asian American Studies (Job ID #45476)
Liberal Arts and Sciences
Faculty
Chicago
11/27/2014

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois, Chicago is seeking candidates for a tenure-track position as an assistant professor in Exile, Conflict, and Security Studies beginning Fall, 2015 subject to budgetary approval.  The primary appointment for this position will be in the Asian American Studies Program (75%), with a possible joint appointment in another academic unit at UIC. This search is part of a multiple-hire cluster initiative on Diaspora Studies, exploring the complex, multi-faceted, and multi-directional frictions and flows, mobilities and immobilities that have accompanied globalization, imperialism, and neoliberalism in the modern world.

Candidates whose work focuses on Asian diasporas, exploring the multiple dimensions of exile, conflict, and (in)security made manifest in the context of geo-political unrest, war, occupation, and/or “failed" and marketized states and who can teach core undergraduate courses in the Asian American Studies Program will receive strongest consideration. The field of specialization is open, but we especially welcome candidates with interdisciplinary, transnational, and comparative projects informed by one or more of the following fields of inquiry: critical ethnic studies, critical diaspora studies, transnational feminist studies, critical refugee studies, and critical legal studies.  The standard teaching load is 2/2. Applicants must have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment.

UIC is a Carnegie Doctoral/Research Extensive University located in the heart of one of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas.  It is a comprehensive public university with a diverse student body of more than 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. UIC is also designated as a Minority Serving Institution through the Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) Initiative, which supports the recruitment, retention, and graduation of Asian American, Pacific Islander, and English language learner students, fully funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

Questions about the position can be directed to Anna Guevarra (guevarra@uic.edu) and Gayatri Reddy (gayatri@uic.edu), co-chairs of the search committee.  Applicants should complete the online application with the names and email addresses of three references and upload a CV, cover letter, statements of research interest and teaching pedagogy and a 20-page writing sample. Complete applications submitted by November 20, 2014 will be given full consideration.
