Postdoctoral Research Associate- Lysakowski Lab, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology (Job ID #168322)
Medicine
Postdoc Res Assoc
Chicago
07/06/2022

Description: The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), invites applications for a Postdoctoral Reseach Associate in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology/Neuroscience.  Potential research projects involve work in animal models of vestibular and inner ear structure and function.  The ideal candidate will have a strong track record in research in neurobiology, molecular cell biology, or related fields, including first-author high-quality scientific publications, and experience in confocal microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, 3D-reconstruction and image analysis procedures (ImageJ, Amira or Imaris), and electron microscopy, including EM immunogold methods, which the lab uses to localize proteins of interest at high-resolution in hair cell and afferents.  Expertise related to two or more of these research areas is ideal, but training will be offered in the others.  The proposed research provides opportunities for studies in structure-function relationships through new/existing collaborations with vestibular electrophysiologists and inner ear geneticists in the field, with an emphasis on producing high-quality complementary morphological studies.  Candidates are expected to be fairly independent in the areas of experimental design, data gathering and analysis, as well as manuscript and grant preparation.  Individuals who are highly motivated for developing careers as independent investigators, are especially encouraged.  Applicants must have excellent written and oral English communication skills, as well as strong presentation and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a diverse and collaborative research and training environment.  We anticipate a fall 2022 start date.

The training environment offers opportunities to collaborate with investigators at nearby University of Chicago and Northwestern University, as well as national and international collaborations.  Chicago is home to six medical schools and one of the largest and oldest chapters of Society for Neuroscience.  UIC is a Carnegie Research I University (1 of 4 in Illinois, 1 of 161 in the US) and home to scientists working on various basic and applied questions related to neuroscience.  The medical school campus is located on the near west side of Chicago, close to downtown Chicago and the Loop.  With approximately 31,000 students and more than 13,000 employees, University of Illinois at Chicago is Chicago’s largest public research university.  UIC has 16 top-ranking colleges and a health sciences system that includes a hospital, clinics and seven health sciences colleges.  Our strength is derived from our commitment to diversity and inclusion.  UIC is among the most diverse campuses in the nation and our campus culture encourages the contributions and success of every individual.

How to Apply/Contact:  Qualified candidates should submit their application by email in one PDF document including:  (1) cover letter; (2) a full CV; (3) a brief statement describing previous work, career goals and research interests; (4) contact information for 3 references to Anna Lysakowski, Ph.D. (alysakow@uic.edu).
