The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) seeks qualified applicants for the Assistant Director of Academic Resource Center for the College of Engineering. The primary goal of Assistant Director of the Academic Resource Center is to guide the academic and educational development and success of our students. The Assistant Director is responsible for assuring student academic success, growth as an individual, adjustment to college life and independence, and ultimately graduation, by maintaining an academic advising caseload and verifying and evaluating official student academic records. Meets with students, primarily by appointment, to provide academic guidance and assistance by planning course schedules, recommending courses, determining appropriate educational goals and solutions, helping to choose/switch majors or minors, providing career guidance. Provides guidance and support to students in their transition from high school to college. Interviews and advises students regarding procedures and academic requirements of a specific program or major and has authority to make commitments on behalf of the university. Develops and presents academic information to orientation groups and potential students and family members. Verifies and evaluates official student academic files.

• Monitors academic progress of students; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring, and counseling) and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance or counseling; communicates academic progress and findings to coaches (for NCAA compliance), financial aid and various administrators and professors.  Advises student academically from orientation to graduation
• Meets with students, by appointment, on a walk-in basis, via group advising, open advising and cohort advising sessions, to assess and advise students on academic and career issues; identifies the educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications; develops an action plan for the student to explore alternative careers and related majors.
• Engages students to ensure successful completion of a degree.  Serves as an ambassador to students to help deal with poor grades, changing majors/minors and provides support for students facing academic difficulties.  Asks appropriate questions to determine how to best serve the student.
• Evaluates official student records including degree checklist; documents all pertinent student information; updates computerized information system regarding changes to student status.
• Reviews accuracy of grade checks, overload petitions and curriculum changes with authority to make changes.
• Exercises discretion and proper judgment when implementing and following administrative policies.
• Interacts with Faculty members and Directors, especially the Directors of Undergraduate Studies, to gather and provide new information regarding curriculum, student academic difficulties and performance to present a unified message to students. 
• Develops, promotes and implements student initiatives and programs, including outreach to internal and external constituencies such as alumni, high schools and community agencies, with the goal of recruitment and retention of targeted population students.
• Advises students transferring from other academic institutions on transfer articulation and determines how courses taken at other institutions, including online courses, will transfer to UIC.  Evaluates and verifies transfer transcripts from other academic institutions for equivalencies and application to degree program.  
• Serves as a subject matter expert within the college on course content and degree requirements.  Applies knowledge of programs throughout the college and study broad options.
• Identifies options for students to satisfy specific degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on academic petitions and adjustments to student's program of study. Recommends appropriate courses.
• Reviews student’s Degree Audit Report (DARs) and makes exceptions manually for courses that have not been articulated to UIC courses.
• Works as a member of a team or on committee, making decisions regarding probation and dismissal, add/drop actions, academic status, degree progress, reinstatement of former students, admission of specific applicant cohorts, awarding of scholarships.  Advises students in navigating through the petition process.  Advises on academic dishonesty allegations.  Serves on committees that make admission and scholarship decisions for the college, plans and implements staff training and development, assesses and improves existing services provided to students.
• Interprets and explains college and university policies and procedures; participates in preparation of new student orientation and presents academic information to interested students and family members during preview days and recruitment events.  Serves as policy expert for the college.
• Assists in recruitment of potential students by advising them of general academic requirements of a specific college or department; describes courses; disseminates information regarding registration procedures; may prepare recruitment packets.
• Gathers and reports necessary information such as GPAs, enrollment statistics, students at risk; prepares various reports as requested and in concert with applicable law (e.g., FERPA).
• Develops and conducts programs and workshops, including but not limited to Internships, Pre-professional Preparation, major exploration, career development, Symposium, New Student Welcome.
• Assists in the development of curriculum; organizes and teaches level 100 orientation classes for freshmen and transfer students.

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business or a related field.

Demonstrated work experience in student/academic advising, counseling or other related field preferably in an institution of higher learning.

Excellent communication, organization, presentation and computer/pc skills are required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office to include: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, along with other related software.
