The Department of Pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago is looking for experienced individual to manage the Research Tissue Imaging Core (RTIC) lab. The RTIC provides a range of digital pathology imaging and analysis services to researchers both within and outside the University. Projects can involve any type of biomedical research, including cell preparations, animal model tissues and human tissues. RTIC services range from whole-slide scanning to the analysis of slides stained using multiplex immunofluorescence. RTIC collaborates closely with the Research Histology Core managed by the UIC Research Resources Center; together, these two core labs form the Research Histology and Tissue Imaging Collaborative (RHTIC).

The incumbent must be capable of comprehensive oversight of the lab, including day-to-day management of work schedules, maintenance of equipment and software, monitoring of lab finances, as well as of management of personnel, marketing and effort reporting.  In addition, the incumbent must have the skills to provide expert support for a wide range of digital pathology projects, including those involving multiplex stains and quantitative image analysis. The position requires good written and oral communication skills, since there is frequent interaction with client researchers, vendors, and administrative staff.

For fullest consideration, please submit a curriculum vitae and names of three references via: https://jobs.uic.edu/job-board/job-details?jobID=167449

Specific Duties:

  • Assume responsibility for general oversight of RTIC operations, as detailed above.
  • Use the Leica Aperio AT2, Akoya Vectra, and other digital microscopy imaging systems as well as image analysis software tools such as ImageJ, Indicalabs HALO®, Akoya inForm® and MatLab to complete imaging projects.
  • Deploy a basic knowledge of the histology of human and animal tissues.
  • Assist in developing image analysis methodologies and algorithms for use in research applications.
  • Perform data transformations and data cleaning services for facility users. Summarize imaging data and provide basic statistical analyses if requested.
  • Aid facility users in the preparation of grants, manuscripts and presentations including providing detailed method descriptions and assessing the feasibility of research proposals.
  • Maintain billing and other administrative data for the core facility. Provide cost estimates for facility users.
  • Assist users in creating graphs and tables for publication and grant applications.
  • Train study personnel on imaging techniques when requested.

Applicants should possess a PhD or equivalent degree in a life science, computer science or engineering-related field, and at least three years of relevant research experience. Evidence of a strong background in biology is expected if the terminal degree is not in the life sciences. Prior didactic training or experience in image processing or analysis is also required, as is experience in data management and statistical analysis as applied to biomedical contexts.
