The Computer Science Department at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is accepting applications for an Academic Advisor.

The position coordinates, oversees and engages undergraduate students in promoting their academic, educational and professional development from orientation up through graduation. Evaluates students’ progress in their respective program, counsels and provides guidance and direction regarding degree requirements, programs, academic and professional planning, course registration, selection and available resources and opportunities. Interprets University, Campus, College, and Department policies and procedures. Has the authority to make commitments on behalf of the University. Develops and presents academic information to orientation groups and potential students and family members. Guides and supports students in their transition from high school and other colleges/universities to UIC.

  • Provides academic advising to prospective and declared students in the Department of Computer Science. Advises and monitors students academically from orientation to graduation, determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward a degree. Communicates academic progress and findings to coaches (for NCAA compliance), financial aid and various administrators, professors and departments.
  • Evaluates undergraduate students’ progress in respective Computer Science programs, evaluating degree requirements, counseling and providing related guidance and direction.
  • Evaluates official student records, including degree checklist, accuracy of grades, overload petitions and curriculum changes with authority to make changes. Documents all pertinent student information.
  • Identifies students’ needs, providing guidance and direction to undergraduate students regarding academic and professional planning. Identifies educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications. Develops an action plan for the student to explore alternative careers and related majors.
  • Guides students through the petition process for exception to academic policies.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert within the college on course content and degree requirements, including study abroad options.
  • Maintains and updates the database as needed, to ensure that student records accurately reflect degree progress, academic and student status.
  • Participates on a team or committee regarding probation and dismissal, add/drop actions, academic status, degree progress, reinstatement of former students, admission of specific applicant cohorts, awarding of scholarships and other actions as needed.
  • Assists with curriculum development and conducts orientation classes for freshmen and transfer students.
  • Assists in the recruitment of potential students by advising them of general academic requirements for Computer Science, disseminates information regarding registration procedures, may prepare and issue recruitment packets and answer related questions from prospective students.
  • Advises students transferring from other academic institutions on transfer articulation for Computer Science, and determines how computing courses taken at other institutions, including online courses, will transfer to UIC. Advises students transferring from other programs at UIC on transfer courses as they relate to the Computer Science program requirements. Evaluates and verifies transfer transcripts from other institutions and transfer credit petitions from students transferring within UIC for equivalencies and application to Computer Science program requirements.
  • Performs other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field required.
  • Demonstrated work experience in student/academic advising, counseling or other related field preferably in an institution of higher learning.
  • Excellent communication, organization, presentation and computer skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office to include: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, along with other related software.
  • Good interpersonal, listening and communication skills. Service oriented attitude. Demonstrate care and  interest in advising.
  • Highly organized.
