The Department of Biomedical & Health Information Sciences (BHIS) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Academic Advisor, Health Informatics and Health Information Management programs.   This position advises students in Health Informatics and Health Information Management academic programs including: enrollment advising and tracking, student recruitment and retention, student progress toward graduation, program evaluation, and administrative organization and communication. This position assures that, in the continuum from admission through graduation, students’ individual educational needs are met while maintaining the academic standards established by the faculty in the Department of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences, under the direction of the Associate Head and in cooperation with the Program Directors and professional staff.  The desired candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, or a related field, Master’s degree preferred, and two years of work experience in a role involving advising, mentoring or coaching students or clients. Experience developing student recruitment and marketing materials preferred.

•Advises incoming and current students regarding coursework and other degree
requirements. Counsels prospective students on appropriate program for student’s career
plans.
• Provides guidance and direction on typical jobs for graduates of Health Informatics and
Health Information Management programs.
• Develops course planning guides for students to use in progress toward degree
requirements.
• Evaluate students’ progress, reviews and revises course planning guides as needed, and
advises regarding completion of all program requirements
• Provides information on scholarships and financial programs.
• Advises students in interdisciplinary minors, concentrations, or degrees as needed.
• Maintains and updates related databases as needed, to ensure that student records
accurately reflect degree progress and academic status.
• Oversees the collection of data for reporting purposes and prepares periodic reports.
• Coordinates admissions policies and procedures including, record management,
application deadlines, and application outcomes.
• Prepares material for new student orientation programs.

• Serves as resource for development of student recruitment marketing materials
including brochures, website, and testimonials. • Participates on committees and/or teams
as assigned.
• Plan, assign and review work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met. Hire, train,
develop and manage staff to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, or a related field, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Two years of work experience in a role involving advising, mentoring or coaching students or clients. Experience developing student recruitment and marketing materials preferred. 
  • Experience with Academic Advising in Higher Education preferred.
  • Knowledge of common practices for advising required.
  • Knowledge of higher education advising, policies and requirements preferred.
  • Experience developing student recruitment marketing materials including brochures, website, and video testimonials preferred.
  • Experience using computer/pc, advanced level proficiency in Microsoft Office to include: Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, along with other related software such as student applicant databases and course management systems.
  • Communicate both written and verbally across all levels of the organization. Develop professional relationships with students, faculty and staff. Work independently with minimal supervision and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to collect and prepare data for presentation to faculty and academic compliance organizations
