The University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UI Health) is seeking to fill the position of Medical Technologist I -Flow Cytometry for Labs Pathology Services.  The Medical Technologist I performs variety of tests of moderately and highly complex nature on variety of patient samples. Medical Technologist I performs qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations using various analyzers and/or manual methods on specimen sources such as blood, bone marrow, tissues, and other body fluids using established procedures. Medical Technologist I performs established quality assurance procedures (quality control testing, instrument function checks and calibrations) maintains appropriate documentation and reports irregularities. Medical Technologist I assists in training of laboratory personnel, new employees, medical residents, and students in the principles and techniques of medical technology.

  • Performs moderately and highly complex tests by various manual and instrumental methods on peripheral blood, bone marrow, body fluids, and tissue specimens with minimal supervision while adhering to policies and procedures for obtaining optimal accuracy and precision of results.
  • Operates, troubleshoots, and resolves flow cytometer’s technical problems and documents corrective action whenever possible according to laboratory procedures and policies.
  • Performs instrument maintenance, QC, start-up, shut-down, and minors troubleshooting.
  • Performs quantitative and qualitative flow cytometry studies including staining for Immunophenotyping panels and cell subset analysis. Assesses specimen adequacy, performs sample preparation using manual and automated methods.    
  • Prepares flow cytometry instrument data for review of instrument performance and to assess patient test result validity.
  • Utilizes flow cytometer computer system to calibrate, to perform quality control, to acquire data, and to review patient histograms base information.
  • Assesses accuracy and validity of obtained test results by applying knowledge of relevant scientific principles, recognizes changes that are critical to patient care, identifies probable causes for irregular and atypical findings; consults with Supervisor prior to the release of results when results are unusual or unanticipated; notifies approved care givers of technical problems with results following Compliance, HIPPA.
  • Performs Bone Marrow collection assistance procedure, maintains bone marrow cart readiness, hands-off supplies as requested by the physician, prepares slides and specimens for analysis. Prepares bone marrow smears, processing, staining, and filing.
  • Performs cases accessioning for Bone Marrows and Immunophenotyping.
  • Receives a wide variety of patient specimens arriving to the laboratory for testing. Performs procedures necessary to prepare specimens for testing or referral to other laboratories.
  • Participates in data collection and monitoring of quality assurance monitors as determined by department and section policy. Maintains appropriate records for these procedures.
  • Completes Quality Assurance Investigation Logs to thoroughly document matters requiring follow-up or corrective action.
  • Maintains a neat, orderly and safe working environment in the laboratory while adhering to all guidelines of OHSA's Blood borne Pathogens Control Act.
  • Adheres to Costumer service guidance, interacts with physicians, patients, staff, visitors and customers via telephone conversations and in person in a professional and helpful manner.
  • Participates in CAP proficiency testing. Performs periodic proficiency (internal and external) testing, participates in data collection and monitoring of quality assurance monitors as determined by department and section policy. Completes Quality Assurance Reports. Participates in the laboratory Continuing Education (CE) program annually.
  • Interacts with physicians, patients, staff, visitors and all customers via telephone conversations and in person in a pleasant and helpful manner.
  • Performs accessioning, resulting, verification, confirming, look-ups, and other LIS laboratory related functions through the UI Hospital LIS.
  •  Assists in training of laboratory personnel, new employees, medical residents and students in the principles and techniques of medical technology.
  • Assists in training of laboratory personnel, new employees, medical residents and students in the principles and techniques of medical technology.                               
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High school graduation or equivalent.
  2. Meets basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing personnel under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Subpart M, Section 493.1489.
