Science today requires documentation of data processing steps and reproducibility of analysis.  PICARD (Platform for the Integration and Computational Analysis of Research Data) is a secure platform designed to store, track, and integrate heterogeneous data while maintaining provenance of both data and transformations.  It is designed to help UIC Investigators access a more streamlined approach to conduct research using data derived from the medical record that includes elements captured in the EMR and additional data types such as imaging (CT, MRI, US, X-Ray), histologic (whole slide, gross pathology images), EKG, PFT, and genetic data. 

Multiple positions are being recruited to provide specific temporary support for various aspects of PICARD.  Opportunities for long-term involvement with the project are available.   

User Interface Development: The positions works with the project team on building a user interface tailored to present data with goals of being informative, useful and aesthetic. Visualizations built will be designed to present tabular data, images, and documents. Project being developed using JavaScript, python, Django.

Backend Development: The position works with the project team to build the backend components necessary to address the security, compliance, utility, and performance needs of the front-end user interface for PICARD.  For this role, coding is expected to be in a modern language such as python.

Backend Infrastructure Support: The position works with the project team to build the backend components necessary to address the security, compliance, utility, and performance needs of PICARD’s core infrastructure necessary to pull data from private, siloed data sources and integrate it into the central system.  For this role, coding is expected to be in a modern language such as python with a possibility of requiring C for interoperability with some legacy systems.

Qualifications:

  • Must currently be enrolled in a graduate degree program at UIC. 
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Computer Engineering) preferred. 
  • 3+ years Systems development experience (python and Django).
  • JavaScript experience required
  • Experience with D3.js is a plus
  • UX experience 
  • Solid knowledge and experience building robust scalable backend services (REST APIs, microservices, designing and implementing efficient data processing algorithms, messaging paradigms, middleware, persistent store).
  • Understands the software development life-cycle, including but not limited to practical work experience in developing and translating logical and physical system diagrams, development of business requirements and system requirements, executing user-acceptance testing.
  • Solid knowledge of software development methodologies and best practices including testing, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, engineering diagrams, and listening skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases and persistence stores.
