This position is responsible for providing CART and transcription services for students, staff, faculty and the UIC community.

• Provide CART for registered UIC students for all types of classroom instruction (i.e., lecture, discussion, lab, pre-recorded, and live online courses) and provide edited or unedited transcripts as needed.

• Provide CART services for academically-related requirements beyond the classroom (i.e., group projects, internships, student-instructor meetings); provide edited or unedited transcripts as needed.

• Provide CART in a variety of situations, including onsite, remote, and projected.

• Provide CART for job-related or University-sponsored events.

• Effective dictionary building through advance preparation using course materials and consultation with consumers and other resources.

• Provide meaningful text access to Deaf and Hard of Hearing consumers by meeting their communication preferences. This means the ability to adapt captioning style to prioritize auditory, environmental, and visual cues over the creation of a perfect transcript.

• Troubleshoot and solve technical CART hardware and software issues as they arise.

• Demonstrated commitment to the CART profession through attainment and maintenance of state or national certifications, service or participation with state and national boards and committees, attendance in state and national conventions, etc.

• Adhere to the ethical and professional standards set by the General Guidelines of Professional Practice and the CART Provider’s Manual as delineated by the National Court Reporter Association (NCRA), and UIC policies regarding Media Transcript Production 

• Create verbatim transcripts for media used by registered UIC students for all types of courses and online media.

• Produce transcripts from media used in the campus community.

• Research media-specific terminology as needed. • Follow Media Captioning Guidelines determined by UIC.

• Assist media captioning production team in syncing transcripts with media as needed. Secondary Job Duties

• Maintain dictionary and research job-specific terminology for optimum real-time and post-production captioning. Ensure readability by including speaker identification and environmental information in a user-friendly format.

• Develop and expand proficiencies in computer applications, networking, wireless technologies, and technological advancements in CART and Media Captioning practices, including hardware and software.

• Develop and expand knowledge of the technology used by people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (i.e. cochlear implants, hearing aids, FM systems, etc.).

• Establish a professional rapport with faculty and consumers to explain and deliver effective CART services.

• Maintain clear communication and confidentiality in spoken and written communication per UIC policies.

• Communicate with individual consumers regarding their CART preferences (i.e., amount of content, auditory affect, environmental sounds, captioning of visual cues, etc.)

• Attend and participate in department staff meetings and retreats to enhance the flow of information necessary to provide high quality and consistent service and a collaborative work environment

• Engage with UIC Disability Resource Center staff on a regular basis (e.g., staff meetings, retreats, daily communication) to enhance the flow of information necessary to provide high quality and consistent service and a collaborative work environment.

• Provide accurate information to faculty, staff, and consumers regarding captioning services, appropriate communication etiquette between Deaf and hearing people, and relevant campus resources.

• Consult and maintain regular contact with campus community, specifically faculty and consumers, to establish rapport and address situational concerns as they arise.

• Positively represent the mission of the UIC Disability Resource Center to members of the UIC community.

• Represent the UIC Disability Resource Center and the CART community professionally in all written and verbal communication.

• Participate in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services administrative projects, including committee work and other duties as assigned. • Act as mentor and conduit for information regarding university processes, technical questions, and campus issues to other staff and community-based captioners.

A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree required. Professional experience or intern experience captioning in a post-secondary setting captioning for individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH). Awareness and cultural sensitivity in working with people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, including knowledge or desire to learn about Deaf Culture. Competency or willingness to develop competency in elementary American Sign Language skills. Working knowledge of disability concerns, accessibility laws, and the value of disability within a diverse context. Able to write real-time at an average minimum speed of 225 WPM and 95%+ accuracy rate across a variety of subject areas. Able to meet captioning technical standards in a variety of acoustical environments (e.g., lecture, discussion, labs, etc.) and with one or more speakers. Able to accept scheduling assignments that vary both in content and time of day from semester to semester Able to independently transport equipment and self to meet the captioning assignment schedule while traveling on a large, congested campus with varied terrain and weather conditions Able to carry a maximum of 30 pounds of captioning equipment on a daily basis to meet the captioning assignment schedule Able to work independently. Excellent grammar skills and attention to detail. Effective time management to meet strict deadlines. Preferred: Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) and/or Certified Realtime Captioner (CRC).
