The University of Illinois at Chicago Library seeks an innovative and service-oriented Instructor and Regional Health Sciences Librarian for the Library of the Health Sciences in Rockford (LHS-R), one of two regional sites of the Library of the Health Sciences in Chicago. 

Job Summary

The Instructor and Regional Health Sciences Librarian will provide general reference and instruction services, in both virtual and face-to-face settings, design instructional materials, and support research initiatives. The librarian will be the library's point of contact with faculty, residents, staff, and students in the Colleges of Medicine and Nursing in Rockford and will collaborate with liaison librarians in Peoria, Rockford, and Chicago. The position reports to the Regional Head Librarian (Rockford).

While scholarship and external service are not required for instructors, they are encouraged to be professionally active and are allocated professional development funds.

About the Library of the Health Sciences-Rockford

The Library of the Health Sciences–Rockford provides research and information services for the College of Medicine which includes the Medical Biotechnology Program and the National Center for Rural Health Professionals, Colleges of Nursing and Pharmacy, and community health professionals and consumers in Northern Illinois. LHS-R serves students, resident physicians, staff and faculty and is open to the public.

About UIC Health Sciences-Rockford

The UIC Health Sciences Campus-Rockford is home to the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford, the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing-Rockford Regional Campus, and the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy at Rockford and their respective programs, centers and research.

Duties as a liaison librarian include:

  • Establish collaborative relationships with faculty, residents, staff and students in the College of Medicine and the College of Nursing
  • Design instruction and provide curricular support for targeted courses
  • Conduct one-on-one and small-group research consultations
  • Contribute to collection development decisions for physical and online health sciences collections
  • Partner with liaisons to the College of Medicine and the College of Nursing across 3 campuses (Chicago, Rockford and Peoria)
  • Participate in outreach to offsite faculty and community health professionals and consumers
  • Participate in library-wide task force/committees

General reference and instruction duties include:

  • Research and instruction support, both face-to-face and virtual, including reference services over chat, email, video conference, and phone. 
  • Course-integrated instruction and general workshops
  • Demonstration of library databases and point-of-care tools
  • Development of online instructional materials (e.g. tutorials, research guides)
  • Perform special projects and other related duties as assigned

 

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program by the start of employment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Familiarity with PubMed and other electronic health information resources
  • Strong user-focused public services orientation
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with diverse users and actively promote library services and resources
  • Basic computer applications skills and understanding of bibliographic management software
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to working collaboratively with diverse groups and individuals

Schedule

The Regional Health Sciences Librarian will occasionally need to work evenings or weekends and cover circulation desk shifts.

Salary/Rank/Contract:

Salaries are commensurate with qualifications and experience; the minimum salary for a full-time twelve-month appointment is $50,000; 24 days of vacation; 12 days annual sick leave with additional disability benefits; 11 paid holidays; medical insurance (contribution based on annual salary; coverage for dependents may be purchased); two dental plans available; life insurance paid for by the State; participation in one of the retirement options of the Illinois State Universities Retirement System compulsory (8% of salary is withheld and is tax exempt until withdrawal); no Social Security coverage but Medicare payment required; this appointment is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois and UIC United Faculty Local 6456, IFT-AFT, AAUP.
