The University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics (UI Health) is seeking a Director of Patient Care Services- Emergency Services to join their team. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of nursing unit(s). Oversees comprehensive health care as determined by the scope of practice guidelines and specialty. Manages the nursing practice, including the delivery of patient care, technical services, quality, safety, planning, organizing, staffing, and clerical practices.

Provide coordination of care and services through the management team of nurses, technicians, professionals and clerical staff. Manage from pre-admission through discharge including monitoring patient care, addressing patient and family needs, resolving obstacles and problems, planning for patient discharge.

Develop a therapeutic relationship with patients, family members, visitors and colleagues.

Interpret and direct the implementation of nursing philosophy and objectives, departmental policies and procedures, and apply recognized standards of nursing care and practice.

Plan, select and devise nursing operations, work methods, procedures, work flow and standards for quality and quantity of work, including staffing standards.

Establish, implement and evaluate quality of care. Plan and develop patient safety innovations and practice improvement.

Integrate shared leadership and foster collaboration across multi-disciplinary disciplines to arrive at decisions affecting the unit.

Assign, direct and review the work of subordinate supervisors/other nursing personnel. Prepare formal answers to, and recommend the adjustment of, grievances and disciplinary matters.

Prepare budget for assigned area or program and is responsible for adherence to approved budget.

Monitor and evaluate operations for compliance with licensure, accreditation and regulatory standards.

Determine personnel, material, equipment, and facilities needed to accomplish program goals.

Plan, assign and review work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met. Hires, trains, develops and manages staff to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.

Provide care coordination utilizing evidence based practice.

Maintain and monitor different unit accreditation.

Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

  • Illinois Registered Nursing license required.
  • Bachelor’s and/or Masters of Science Degree in Nursing required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of five (5) years clinical nursing experience with progressive responsibility is required.
  • Three (3) years management experience is preferred.
  • Strong communication, customer service and decision–making skills is required. Knowledge of budgetary processes and financial principles; knowledge of labor laws, standards of care, and regulatory standards required.
