The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is seeking an experienced Linux/Windows System Administrator to join our growing team. This position will be responsible for the managing Research Resources Center (RRC) IT infrastructure including servers, networks, and desktops. IT Technical Associate will be tasked to act as main point of contact for responding to users’ IT trouble tickets, documenting electronic assets, forming/maintaining standardized access policies, and upgrading physical and virtual infrastructure as needed. Position will be responsible to work in both Linux and Windows environments and will be tasked to assist with providing technical support to maintain scientific instrumentation housed within various research labs.

  • Installation, configuration, and administration of Linux servers (CentOS, RHEL, and Slackware), Windows servers, VMWare vSphere, vCenter, OVIRT, Commvault, Nagios, servers, desktops, printers, laptops, wireless access points, routers, projectors, screens, and firewalls. Provide support for commercial software from external vendors used by various Cores.
  • Design and maintain efficient data backup and recovery policies/procedures to ensure business continuity. Develop and maintain a business continuity and disaster recovery plan to ensure 24/7 availability of critical systems and restoration of research data and services in the event of failure of IT. Active Directory and Group Policy management and support.
  • Provide overall system administration expertise in various platforms to design and implement solutions for challenging research IT problems
  • Maintain, audit, and enhance security system and ensure integrity of housed IT infrastructure
  • Manages and maintains both network and system level access controls.
  • Design, create and maintain IT infrastructure documentation. Provide basic system and network support of scientific instrument workstations
  • Contribute to long term Research Information Technology organization, operation, and supervision of staff by anticipating, assessing, and planning for future needs
  • Work with outside vendors to design and procure efficient and cost-effective solutions to business needs.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
  2. A minimum of 1 year demonstrated experience in Systems Administration & Operations which includes demonstrated experience in configuration, installation, maintenance, backup/recovery and upgrading multi-user computer systems hardware and software as well as establishing/managing user accounts.
  3. Windows Server Administration, working with windows active directory, group policy management, SCCM
  4. Demonstrated experience managing cluster environment (Ovirt or VMWare), SAN storage administration, Linux System Administration & Operation, configuration, installation, maintenance, backup / recovery and upgrading multi-user computer systems hardware and software as well as establishing/ managing user accounts.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ideal candidate would have 2-3 years of experience in Linux/Windows System Administration.
  • Demonstrated experience managing virtual environments such as Ovirt.
  • Thorough understanding of Networking concepts
  • Experience managing VMWare Cluster environment including Esxi, vSphere and VCenter.
  • Experience managing SAN storage environment.
  • Experience working with Domain controller
  • Experience working with Nagios monitoring software
  • Experience working with Linux Network administration and Operating systems
  • Experience working with managing backups and restores using Commvault backup software and tape libraries.
  • Demonstrated experience managing firewalls and monitoring vulnerability scanning software
