The Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement (IPCE) at UIC serves as a catalyst for learning and participatory action in discourse, research and educational programs.

The Urban Public Policy Fellowship (UPPF) program is a leadership development program designed to expose historically underrepresented minority undergraduate students at the University of Illinois at Chicago to key public policy issues. The program provides Fellows with seminars covering the areas of public policy-making, advocacy, community development, and service provision, and a valuable internship experience.

The UPPF program works closely with IPCE’s partners, African American Academic Network (AAAN) and the Latin American Recruitment and Educational Services (LARES). 

The Graduate Assistant typically –

Provides support to program manager, administrator or other senior staff, serving as a graduate assistant with staff advisor and performing professional support tasks, assists with necessary tasks:

  1. The Graduate Assistant serves as a mentor to the UPP fellow by advising/providing curricular and academic advice to students.
  2. Graduate Assistant follows the progress of the fellow from the beginning of the year through convocation. This includes assisting students with choosing projects, monitoring project deadlines as needed in assuring the fellow is making progress on their research project, support with poster creation and presentation for UPPF Symposium. 
  3. Schedules, assigns, reviews and/or provides recommendations regarding work within the program.
  4. Assists with creation of content for department web page and social media platforms; outreach duties such as publicizing programs and activities to campus and public constituencies for yearly informational sessions and working with/assisting with event management of annual UPPF research symposium and closing ceremony.
  5. In addition to providing academic support the GA mentor will be responsible for making sure the fellow is maintaining the requirements of the fellowship including communicating with, tracking attendance, and assessing issues at the internship sites.

Enrollment in a graduate program, candidate must be a full-time, degree-seeking student (Public Policy) preferred in a graduate program. Must be able to attend weekly (required) seminars held on Friday afternoons.

This is a 50% time position to start on August 8, 2022. Provided performance expectations are met, the position may be renewed in the Spring semester.
