The section of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is seeking a dynamic Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) to join our team.

Primary responsibility is in patient care services. APRN will provide clinical care to young patients (ages birth to 25 years) with hematologic disorders including sickle cell disease, bleeding/clotting disorders and neoplastic disorders (cancer, benign tumors, vascular anomalies). APRN will independently assess patients in follow-up, oversee chemotherapy, biologic agents and blood product infusions in the outpatient Pediatric Infusion Room, and work with the Sickle Cell and Children’s Oncology Group clinical trial research teams. Candidate will have the clinical expertise to recognize normal and abnormal patterns of childhood growth and development.

APRN also functions as a consultant, educator, researcher, resource and role model for patient, families, community, nursing personnel and other health care providers. APRN evaluates the quality of care rendered; analyzes and promotes system changes to enhance quality of care and organizational effectiveness and efficiency; conducts and utilizes research to promote health and improve health care delivery and assumes responsibility for professional development.

Diagnostic reasoning, advanced therapeutic interventions and education are key elements in the direct provision of care using a collaborative model. APRN works as an autonomous practitioner and in collaboration with physician(s), and is directly accountable for making clinical judgments using independent and interdependent decision-making skills. Primary focus is on the provision of direct and indirect patient care in managing the health care needs of the identified client population(s). APRN provides care to a specific patient population using advanced skills in physical exam, diagnosis and treatment, writes medical orders (medications, tests and invasive procedures) and may perform or assist with bone marrow aspirates and biopsies and intrathecal infusions of chemotherapy via lumbar puncture or omaya reservoirs.

  • Master degree in Nursing or Doctorate in Nursing required.
  • Active licensure in the State of Illinois as an APRN is required.
  • Completed Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Course or complete prior to start date.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required.
  • A minimum of three years of related experience in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology is required.
  • Experience with Sickle Cell disease required.
  • Extensive pain management experience including both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic measures.
  • Experience with care coordination for complex chronic disease, social determinants of health, health disparities, and minority health issues.
