The University of Illinois College of Medicine invites nominations and applications for the position of Head of the Department of Anesthesiology.  We seek an outstanding anesthesiologist with a record of significant contributions to academic anesthesiology. The successful candidate will build upon ongoing growth to enhance the Department’s presence on a national and global stage through innovative research, education, and delivery of cutting-edge care.  The new Head will join the College and University at an exciting time of upcoming clinical expansion, featuring a new Outpatient Care Center, and will work closely with Executive Dean Mark Rosenblatt MD, PhD, MBA, MHA.

The Department of Anesthesiology offers a broad range of clinical services, educational, and research opportunities. Much of its success stems from the experience and diversity of our faculty. Many of our graduates are innovators and leaders within our specialty. 

Reporting to the Executive Dean, the ideal candidate will be a nationally-recognized physician leader and scholar in Anesthesiology, with a proven commitment to clinical care, medical education, training, and research. They will have the knowledge and ability to effectively lead physicians and other health professionals, researchers, and educators, while embracing the values of quality, health equity and financial sustainability.

The candidate will be a board certified clinician who brings a strong track record of scholarly activity, leadership, and mentoring faculty at all stages of career development along with a demonstrated commitment to sponsored research and a desire to expand the research portfolio of the Department.  Additionally, candidates must have leadership experience required to oversee a busy clinical department across multiple locations, integrity, intellect, maturity, ability to work collaboratively with numerous stakeholders, and a vision for leading a modern thriving academic Department of Anesthesiology in an age of health reform.

Qualified candidates will possess an MD or equivalent medical degree, and have credentials appropriate for an appointment at the rank of tenure line or clinical track Professor. Proven and substantial scholarly activity and leadership experience is required, as is a track record as a collaborative leader in a rapidly evolving model of care.
