Postdoctoral Research Associate (Job ID #159097)
Engineering
Postdoc Res Assoc
Chicago
02/01/2022

The Project Goal is to develop a novel air-conditioning system based on a new method of evaporative cooling for humid climates (the MCPlus Unit developed by Baryon) and highly effective dehumidification through a new type of ionic membrane (MDPlus Unit developed by Xergy). Due to its unique arrangement, the proposed solution is able to operate highly effective in humid climates, consuming from 50 to 85% less energy than traditional air-conditioning systems and it is able to generate water for its own operation (i.e., with no water consumption). The proposed unit fully meets the EERE requirements, by achieving cooling COPs higher than 12.5 through whole cooling season, even in very humid climates. It is also characterized by net zero water consumption. The system’s simple structure allows to have a size similar, or smaller than typical AC units and its installed cost will not exceed $12/kBtu/h. The primary energy saving potential of the technology is 2,990.0 TBtu (average savings of 65% for all residential and commercial cooling equipment). The Post-Doc will lead the team for the embedded control system development at UIC and work closely with all the other partners in the project.
