The Social Justice Initiative (SJI) at UIC is a campus-wide project that began in 2010. SJI seeks to build upon and foreground a critically important part of UIC’s mission as a public research university in a diverse global city. Our work is focused on promoting a greater good, serving the under-served, and improving lives through scholarship, teaching and community engagement. 

Over 200 UIC faculty and staff describe their research, teaching, and professional work as social justice related. From studies of racial and gender violence, to oral histories of undocumented workers, to health care providers that intervene in crises all over the world, UIC scholars are engaged in life altering research that promotes greater equity, inclusion, justice and sustainability. 

The Social Justice Initiative is seeking a full-time Director of Special Projects and Publications.

This position organizes and implements the special pilot projects of the Social Justice Initiative, including an extended collaborative symposia focused on social justice questions, a set of mini-courses and reading groups that will produce documents and media products in conjunction with community partners. Assist with the solicitation and editing of manuscripts, and the coordination of the review process for the academic journal, Souls.

  • Oversee coordination of editorial, solicitation and manuscript review for an academic journal, Souls, and coordinate the rebranding and relaunch of the journal. 
  • Conceptualize and coordinate the summer and winter institutes and symposia – including Maroon Institute, Portal Project symposia, and the Prison education project, after consultation with community and academic partners and affiliates. 
  • Write and oversee design and production of the Social Justice Initiative’s annual report, with support from the director and associate directors. 
  • Organize programs and conference and plan events related to the themes of SJI and SERJ and the topics of special issues of Souls journal. 
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
  • A Master’s degree in social sciences, humanities or public policy required.
  • Publishing and editing experience required.
  • Experience with social justice scholarship and practice.
  • Experience with social justice issues related the gender, race, sexuality and/or social class.
  • Knowledge of social justice issues related the gender, race, sexuality and/or social class.
  • Excellent communication and computer skills.
  • Ability to translate strategy to action.
  • Ability to communicate to large groups.

Salary Range: $65,000 - $70,000 annually
