The Sandi Port Errant Language and Culture Learning Center (LCLC) at the University of Illinois at Chicago invites applications for a post-doctoral research associate in teaching and learning. We seek a creative and organized postdoctoral research associate whose experience and planned research projects engage with the LCLC’s missions of peer tutoring and teaching with technology in the fields of foreign language, literature, and culture. 

The postdoctoral research associate will collaborate with the Director of the LCLC on day to day running of the Language and Culture Learning Center. The position will start August 16, 2022. Initial appointment for two years renewable for up to three years. The postdoc is a full-time 9-month salaried position with full benefits.

 

Mentor and teach 70%

  • Mentor undergraduate students by co-directing the LCLC Language Peer Tutoring program, including supervising in person and online one-on-one peer tutoring, and in class Language Learning Assistants.
  • Collaborate with LCLC Director to provide support and feedback for Professional Development tasks for peer tutors, including social media and blog posts, and film and article reviews.
  • Mentor graduate students by working with the LCLC TAs:  in collaboration with the LCLC Director, set tasks and goals for the TAs, supervise them, evaluate them in tasks related to peer tutoring and to faculty tech support.
  • Co-teach with LCLC Director the Peer Tutoring Apprenticeship class, a one-credit class for students interested in becoming tutors.
  • Co-teach LCSL 505 Teaching Professional Development Workshop, a one-credit course for graduate students, one course each academic semester.
    • Use appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods including development and incorporation of innovative teaching techniques, as well as student advising and course and curriculum development.
  • Set, mark and assess work and provide feedback to students in both classes (Peer Tutoring Apprenticeship and LCSL 505).

 

Participate in the Program    20%

  • Support LCLC program initiatives, as needed.
  • Participate in meetings as required.
  • Professionally represent the programs, projects, initiatives and goals of the LCLC.
  • Participate in collaborating with other UIC help centers and nationally; identifying grants and collaborating on grant applications; presenting and/or participating in and helping to organize local and national conferences; carrying out other tasks as needed for the maintenance of the LCLC.

 

Contributions to the Discipline/Professional Development   10%

  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Attend and participate in conferences as needed.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned

Candidates must have completed the Ph.D. between 2018 and July 15, 2022.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in one of the following: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Applied Linguistics, or a related field, and have college-level teaching experience in at least one of the listed languages.  Candidates who do not hold a Ph.D. in one of the above languages must have an M.A. in one of these languages.

The ideal candidate will have administrative experience, including coordinating courses or departmental service.
