The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) seeks a passionate, dedicated, and talented leader to manage the external operations and drive revenues to further the growth and success of its student-athletes, teams, and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

The Deputy Athletics Director for External Operations / Chief Revenue Officer (Deputy AD) is directly responsible for all Athletics’ external operations and strategic initiatives, including: advancement, partnerships, communications, marketing, branding, creative video, graphic design, digital media, and ticketing.  The position reports jointly to the Director of Athletics (for athletics matters) and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Advancement (for advancement matters), and serves on the Athletics Executive Cabinet, the department’s senior leadership team responsible for strategic implementation and resource allocation. The Deputy AD will supervise select sports programs as assigned.

Revenue Generation

  • Lead the department’s revenue generation efforts through all channels, including fundraising, partnerships, ticket sales, licensing, and merchandising, etc. 
  • Establish annual and long-term goals in support of the department’s strategic initiatives and fundraising priorities; implement comprehensive fundraising programs and activities that support the goals of the department; determine and monitor key performance metrics and benchmarks to assess performance and measure success.
  • Oversight of Flames Athletic Fund and athletic letter-winners’ organizations, including coordination of volunteer leadership capable of actively supporting the department’s goals through fundraising, consultation and advocacy.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of prospects, donors, and partners by qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts and partnerships from individuals, foundations, and corporations. 
  • Work collaboratively with other institutional advancement units to coordinate contacts and solicitation strategies.
  • Oversee the department’s basketball ticket sales strategies for season, group, and single game sales.
  • Oversee the department’s relationship with its third-party multimedia partner to cultivate, solicit and steward corporate partners; ensure successful partnership sales, activations, and fulfillment.
  • Oversee the department’s licensing and merchandising program, working collaboratively with university and other partners.

Strategic Communications, Marketing and Branding

  • Oversee the department’s strategic communications to maximize visibility for UIC Athletics and its sports programs, including but not limited to digital and social media, email and direct mail, and press releases.
  • Oversee all marketing and promotional initiatives and campaigns to inform and attract target audiences.
  • Oversee digital and linear broadcasts and related content and in-venue presentations for all games and special events.
  • Steward the UIC Flames Athletic brand; maintain high brand standards for all design, video, social, physical, and other brand applications; serve as the department’s final approval of usage.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development, monitoring and implementation of the department’s Name, Image & Likeness (NIL) strategies.

Leadership & Administrative

  • Lead, manage, and coordinate all Athletics external operations staff.
  • Supervise coaches and the day-to-day management of assigned varsity teams.
  • Plan, develop, administer, and evaluate areas of responsibility, and conduct regular evaluations of personnel.
  • Represent UIC Athletics on internal and external committees, including the Chancellors Athletic Advisory Committee, Horizon League and NCAA Committees.
  • Conduct all duties in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures, including: UIC, UIC Athletics, OVCA, University of Illinois Foundation, NCAA, and Horizon League.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. 

The ideal candidate will be an experienced professional who is ambitious, strategic, and a motivating leader. Other qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Five or more years of successful fundraising and/or revenue generation experience in sports.
  • Demonstrated managerial experience.
  • Demonstrated success in major gift fundraising and/or annual giving programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to productively engage with diverse audiences including athletics administration, coaches, student-athletes, boosters, faculty and institutional staff, conference and NCAA personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and exercise sound judgement in complex environments.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to compliance with NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Commitment to the academic success, personal development and overall wellbeing of student-athletes.
  • Commitment to integrity, diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to balance multiple initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated success closing major gifts preferred.
  • Demonstrated success working with or leading intercollegiate athletics annual funds preferred.
  • Demonstrated progressive leadership roles in intercollegiate athletics.
