Under general supervision, the Reimbursement Coding Specialist will be responsible for coding patient services within the division.  The Reimbursement Coding Specialist will provide appropriate, timely and accurate physician billing services.  The Reimbursement Coding Specialist will work with members of the clinic staff and division to bill clean and timely claims to insurance companies, along with referrals/authorizations, correct and billable CPT and diagnosis codes. 

  1. Oversee that all charges submitted by physicians are completed, accurate and meet medical and insurance criteria in order to obtain payment.
  2. Assist Physicians and nurses with coding procedures or ICD-cm codes.
  3. Ensure that CPT codes match medical necessity of the ICD-cm codes being billed.
  4. Ensure that pre-certifications/authorizations and referrals are obtained for future services
  5. Submit accurate claims from physician’s services.
  6. Track claims through EPIC (billing system) to ensure appropriate payment was obtained.
  7. Communicate with patients and/or other physicians on issues related to benefits, co-payments, deductibles after receiving surgical care.
  8. Update fee schedule.
  9. Ensure that Divisional Physicians are participating providers (in- network) with the members plan.
  10. Resolve any denied or pended claims in coordination with Accounts Receivable department.
  11. Adhere to HIPPA guidelines related release of patient information.
  12. Assist the insurance coordinator with verification of patient insurance pre-certifications.

1.             High School graduation or equivalent.

2.            Current certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist—Physician-based (CCS-P) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or current certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or a Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) (formerly CPC-H certification).

3.           One (1) year/twelve (12) months of work experience comparable to that performed at the Reimbursement Coding Representative level of this series or in other positions of comparable responsibility.
