The Student Sustainability Program Director directs the signature student facing programs within the Office of Planning, Sustainability, and Project Management. This position is integral in developing and sustaining mutually beneficial relationships with UIC students. This role is responsible for managing the Sustainability Internship and Sustainability Fee Programs. The Program Director recruits students to the program and advises them. They promote and solicit proposals for the Sustainability Fee.  Administers the dispersal of funds to students and/or student groups. Coordinates student projects. 

Sustainability Internship Program (SIP): Directs the Sustainability Internship Program. Recruits mentors and students. Designs internship descriptions. Directs the structure, logistics and scheduling of the program. Provides instruction and support for US/PUBH390 Sustainability Internship course and summer intern seminar. Develops promotional material, procedures, and policies for the program. Creates content for website. Maintains professional and technical knowledge in the field of education for sustainability.

Oversees recruitment of students through outreach to students, student organizations, and classes on campus.  This includes formal presentations and tours about SIP, Student Sustainability Fee, and the other sustainability programs.  Directs advising and education to the Eco-Educator student group and student interns on professional student development in sustainability (conferences, graduate school, funding). Supports student success (retention and graduation). Coordinates the student hiring process with the assigned unit HR staff. Approves timesheets for student employees.

Project Management: Coordinates with selected students and departments on the implementation of their sustainability fee projects. Coaches students on how to increase the sustainable elements of each project. Guides students in how to navigate a complex organizational system (UIC) and develops their project management skills. Acts a primary liaison to campus, agencies, administrators, and external vendors to ensure successful completion of projects.

Sustainability Fee project development: Markets Sustainability Fee to students and specific courses/faculty - updates website content, drafts social media messages, and email. Manages student application process. Recruits members for and works with Sustainability Fee Advisory Board to review and select applications. Develops procedures and policies for the program.

Under the guidance of the Assistant Vice-Chancellor and Director of Sustainability, develops the Sustainability Fee budget and monitors each project’s budget. Reviews and reconciles monthly expense reports. Complies with University rules and regulations for management of finances. Works with partner organizations to fulfill the Sustainability Fee’s goals.

Liaises and provides support to the Education and Research Subcommittee of the Chancellor’s Committee on Sustainability and Energy. Develops initiatives to incorporate sustainability into the curriculum such as the Teaching Sustainability Initiative. 

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in environmental or sustainability science or closely related fields of study.
  2. A total of three (3) years (36 months) experience within Sustainability Programs.
  3. Demonstrated experience developing, designing and implementing sustainability programs within educational institutions or non-profits.

Note: Master’s degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1 year) of work experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Effectively plan, delegate, and supervise the work of students
  • Work effectively with faculty and staff across multiple disciplines
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for sustainability curriculum and/or cocurricular programs
