Building Operating Engineer (Job ID #143014)

This position is located at the College of Medicine Rockford campus which is 90 miles northwest of the Chicago campus.

Operation and maintenance of all building heating, cooling, mechanical, electrical,
and structural systems for the Physicial Plant department at the College of Medicine Rockford.

1. Operate, maintain, and inspect: Heating systems;Ventilation systems; Air conditioning systems; Geothermal System; Lighting and power systems; Pneumatic and electrical control systems; BAS System.

2. Perform repair and maintenance to building structures or recommend need for contractual services. Perform emergency repair/maintenance work as required.

3. Carry out department preventive maintenance programs and provide recommendations. Consult with and advise Coordinator regarding observations relative to building operating and electric systems and action to be taken.

4. Keep clear, concise and complete records and logs on equipment, parts, chemicals, etc. and submit weekly reports to State Water Survey.

5. Maintain inventory of department equipment and consumables, prepare reports as required.

6. May be responsible for periodic routine visits to the community health center to carry out preventive maintenance program or other building related repairs and projects.

7. May supervise one or more workers when assistance is required to complete a variety of maintenance projects or to perform the ongoing preventive maintenance routine.

8. Participate fully in a self-directed work team. Assist in the training of new maintenance employees. Act as lead person in event of building mechanic foreman’s absence.

9. Perform snow removal duties which could include operation of snow plow, skid steer with snow blower, walk-behind snow blower or snow shovel. On call for snow removal as needed.

10. Other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

1. High school graduate or equivalent.

2. Three years of full-time paid employment in the maintenance of a variety of building mechanical equipment and/or as a mechanic of refrigeration, ventilation, and/or food-service equipment.

Preferred Qualifications: 

1. Five plus years HVAC experience, including heat pumps, chillers, steam boilers/generators, electrical, DX units.

2. Strong mechanical ability.

3. Background in operating and maintaining items such as:

  • 100 HP steam boilers
  • Pneumatic and electrical systems
  • 290 ton and smaller chillers
  • 30 HP air handling supply and return systems
  • Chilled and hot water circulating supply system
  • Major water softening equipment
  • Heat pumps/geothermal/make-up air units with heat recovery
  • Electrical wiring and troubleshooting
  • Plumbing
  • General construction and carpentry

4. Experience in general maintenance and various types of equipment.
