The  Director of Assessment and Evaluation for the College of Medicine (COM) will provide leadership, oversight, monitoring and execution of the assessment and evaluation processes for the medical students and curriculum across the four curricular years (M1-M4) and across the college (all campuses). The overarching objective of the position is to ensure that all assessments utilized for student development (formative) or student  assessment (summative, for grade) meet or exceed the highest standards specified by the college, the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Educational Research Association, and the American Psychological Association.

 

The director will develop policies and procedures to guide the evaluation and assessment experiences of the medical students across the college, and implement periodic appraisal of their efficacy.  The role will create, with faculty, research initiatives in medical education methods that impact the programs of our students.  Working closely with leadership in medical education, the director will be housed in the Office of Educational Affairs, a component of the college’s central administration, reporting to the associate dean for educational planning and quality Improvement.  This position is vital to the College of Medicine’s accreditation process through the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and to the College of Medicine’s active involvement as a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Working closely with the Associate Dean for Educational Planning and Quality Improvement, collaborate with medical education leadership across the college on the design and implementation of tools and operations that assess and evaluate educational programs involving medical students as well as evaluate the effectiveness of curriculum in meeting measurable educational goals and strategies. 

• Develop policies and procedures to guide the evaluation and assessment experiences of the medical students across the college and implement periodic appraisal of their efficacy 

• Monitor and provide direction to medical education staff in the production, scoring, and analysis of the examinations given to medical students across the curriculum.

Collaborate with the faculty and staff of the Department of Medical Education in research projects focusing on the education of our students.

• Collaborate with faculty in developing research initiatives in medical education methods that impact the programs of our students.

• Provide direction and expertise to all COM departments and faculty in setting goals and developing action plans addressing policies and procedures for test development, administration, recording, and security of all assessments in the college. 

• Oversee the design, construction and use of policies and procedures to gather, interpret, and present data associated with the performance of students, faculty, departments, and educational units to stakeholders and decision makers at all levels within the COM. 

• Plan and direct the evaluation of clinical sites that participate in one or more of the COM clerkship programs (i.e., Family Medicine, Medicine, Neurology, OB/Gyn, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Surgery) across the college. 

• Serve on curricular committees as assigned.

• Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

A Ph.D, or Ed.D required with focus in educational or psychological measurement preferred.

Extensive previous experience in assessment development and delivery preferably in academic/medical institutions.

Previous experience as an internal change agent within an organization, preferably a medical education organization. Minimum years’ experience required for this job 2 - 5 years

Knowledge and expertise in advanced statistical and computer applications in educational assessment.

Expert knowledge in the areas of educational and psychological learning and measurement theory, applied psychometric theory, individual and organizational evaluation methods and practice, professional guidelines and practices.

Knowledge of organizational behavior as it relates to the various components of individual medical educational entities (e.g., courses, departments, college administrators, etc.) preferred.

Abilities associated with the role of intra-organizational consultant and change agent.

Previous experience in both assessment development (preferably in the health sciences) and examination administration in a large organization.
