The position will directly manage and oversee the security functions at the University of Illinois Hospital (UIH) and Clinics. It will direct the daily activities and operations of the security staff/personnel in safeguarding the UIH properties, personnel, and visitors/guests, ensuring that all components of the security operations are properly trained, responsive and supportive of the needs and requirements of the University of Illinois Hospital and Clinical security operation.  This position will be responsible for compliance with security requirements established by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Joint Commission and Hospital Administration. The Director will be responsible for recommendations for implementation of security, loss-prevention, crime prevention, drug diversion and related policies.  This position will be responsible for ongoing assessment, guidance and strategies related to workplace violence.  
 


  • Develop, review, execute, and supervise implementation of the University of Illinois Hospital (UIH) security management plan and security operational procedures in compliance with The University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UI Health) policies and procedures, Joint Commission standards, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and applicable federal, state and local laws regulations.

  • Assume ownership of assigned hospital policies to include development, reviewing, editing, and submitting for approvals. Works with Hospital, Clinic and UIC-Police administration to determine the need for, and to coordinate, programs related to the overall security and personnel safety for the University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics. 

• Establish, supervise crime prevention, safety workplace violence training for the hospital and clinic heads/management, staff, personnel, and department in-service. 


• Prepare and submit crime prevention, and security awareness materials along with related measurements and findings to the Captain of Medical Complex Operations.

• Prepare and present related reports and findings, making recommendations to the Captain of Medical Complex Operations for revisions and changes to ensure the ongoing safety of the University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics, staff, personnel, and guests/visitors. 

• Provide consultation and advice regarding security measures and technology related to building Provide consultation and advice regarding security measures and technology related to building renovations and/or new building construction, working with project architects, project managers, vendor personnel and building tenants as necessary. 

• Provide research and advice to management regarding building security and access control technology, communicating with vendors as assigned and keeping abreast of the latest developments in building security technology. 

• Review all division of security Internal Affairs investigations packets for completeness and accuracy.   

• Will investigate security performance and patient safety event reporting complaints through established hospital systems. 

• Serve as administrative liaison between the security hospital operation and hospital clinics management team. Will work with the Police Investigative Staff regarding investigations of reported criminal activities, making recommendation for new or revised changes to safety and/or loss prevention.

• Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.  

 

 

• Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in criminology, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.

• Requires a minimum of 5 years of proven and progressive administration experience in the security field, preferably in a hospital/healthcare setting. Prior experience should include working in both union and non-union environments.

  • Requires a PERC (Permanent Employee Registration Card) as defined in the Private Detective, Private Alarm, Private Security, Fingerprint Vendor and Locksmith Act, issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation or be able to obtain one within six (6) months of employment. 

• Requires knowledge and prior working experience with disciplinary and grievance procedures preferably in a union setting. 

• Requires good communication, presentation, organization, analytical and computer/pc skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office to include: Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint and proficiency security related software. 

• Requires a good driving record and proof of insurance.
