The University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System’s Hospital Pharmacy Services is seeking a full time, motivated professional for the position of Pharmacy Technician I Intern/Trainee.   Under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician I Intern/Trainee will perform technical job functions and responsibilities which optimize safe and efficient medication preparation and delivery.  UI Health - Hospital Pharmacy Services is a fast paced and dynamic environment which relies on the teamwork of its staff to provide the highest levels of patient care and service.

UI Health also offers competitive salaries.  The rate for this position is $17.25 hourly. 

Shift:  Enjoy weekends off!  The shift for this position is primarily an evening shift, starting at either 2pm or 2:30pm, Monday - Friday with possible rotation to days and midnight shift in a 24/7 hospital environment.

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Preparation of medication orders for unit dose and intravenous admixture. – 40%
    1. Select the correct medication or medical supply from stock based on a physician order.
    2. Prepare intravenous admixtures and other sterile products using aseptic techniques.
    3. Compound and reconstitute drug products on a timely basis, and document all the necessary information for their preparation.
    4. Demonstrate safe and effective handling of hazardous medication in preparation techniques and disposal.
    5. Label the medication in accordance with Departmental Standards and Policy and Procedures.
    6. Prepare pediatric dilution when required.
    7. Repackage the appropriate amount of medication.
    8. Record all necessary information for the preparation and control of extemporaneous packaging.
    9. Dispose of all needles, syringes, and pharmaceutical waste in the appropriate container.
    10. Maintain the integrity of the laminar flow hood through routine cleaning, changing of the pre-filters, and adhering to all preparation procedures.
      1. Distribution of medication. – 40%
        1. Transport medications and admixtures to the assigned pharmacy or nursing unit and place in the correct storage area.
        2. Fill and maintain Automated Medication Dispensing Cabinet System (AMC) as necessary.
        3. Collect, fill, and deliver approved patient specific medications to assigned patient care areas and place in the correct storage area.
        4. Acquire drugs from other satellites or locations when necessary.
          1. Completion of all training and homework projects. -10%
            1. Maintain a clean and organized pharmacy environment. – 5%
              1. Routine cleaning of all areas of pharmacy including counters, shelves, computer monitors, computer keyboards, unit-dose medication drawers, carts, AMC, conference room, and break area.
              2. Shelving books, clearing clutter from counters, and keeping the pharmacy neat and orderly.
              3. Maintaining and replenishing supplies.
              4. Assisting in the perpetual inventory of controlled substances as assigned.
              5. Assisting in the maintenance of minimum acceptable inventory and a maximum turnover of drugs, monitoring and removing expired drugs from inventory.
              6. Processing AMC rejects, and returning medications not administered to patients to inventory.  
                1. Answer telephone promptly and courteously in accordance with UI CARE standards. All calls should be answered by the second ring. – 4%
                  1. Other related duties as assigned. – 1%

  • Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the State of Illinois
