The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria seeks a Board Certified Emergency Physician to serve as the Academic Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. This department was established in 2014. Under the leadership of their first chair, the department has strengthened the educational programs both UGME and GME. Emergency Medicine is a highly rated elective by the students considering a career in EM and is an active department in terms of scholarship and academic productivity.

The Academic Chair will work closely with the OSF elected Emergency Medicine Department Chair and the Medical Director of Emergency Services to provide oversight of the academic activities of the academic Department of Emergency Medicine. Certain responsibilities include: providing leadership in managing and implementation of departmental initiatives; enhancing the academic and education mission of the department; expanding the reputation of the department in area of scholarly activity and scholarship; and providing faculty development.

The qualified candidate will have an MD degree with board certification in Emergency Medicine and hold or be eligible for licensure in Emergency Medicine.

Provide leadership in managing and implementation of departmental initiatives that align with the organizational goals including:

  1. Managing department personnel
  2. Ensuring compliance with university procedures
  3. Making budget decisions consistent with department goals and striving for fiscal growth and sustainability
  4. Investing time and effort into business development, working with affiliated hospitals as appropriate
  5. Creating business development plans that are feasible and focused on collaboratively growing the department with OSF and clinical affiliates
  6. Reviewing and Realigning  Vision for UICOMP  Department of Emergency Medicine based on UICOMP Strategic initiatives and goals
  7. Communicating and coordinating Vision and Goals with clinical affiliate leadership

Steward departmental resources, create culture of fiscal transparency and responsibility

Enhances the academic and education mission of the department including:

  1. Overseeing all discipline-specific educational programs
  2. Oversight of Program Director/Associate and Assistant Program Directors in Education of all EM Residents
  3. Oversight of Medical Student Clerkship Director in coordination of M3 and M4 rotations including evaluations
  4. Expanding the GME programs
  5. Develop a rural EM program based on needs assessment
  6. Serving students, residents and faculty as a respected educator and mentor
  7. Maintaining faculty participation in educational activities including timely completion of learner evaluation
  8. Participating in undergraduate and graduate medical education

Expand the reputation of the department in area of scholarly activity and scholarship including:

  1. Encouraging successful research & scholarship in the department
  2. Increasing the number of scholarly and research efforts in the department
  3. Advance discovery through QI, innovation and research and help build research programs aligned with the mission/vision of UICOMP
  4. Enhance participation and scholarship opportunities through JUMP and ARCHES Program
  5. Providing oversight and sign-off responsibilities of all EM research
  6.  Developing and providing oversight of a research clearinghouse for ED Faculty including EM faculty working at JUMP simulation and education cente
  7. Encouraging and enhancing attendance at Local, Regional and National meetings
  8. Providing oversight of representation on Local, Regional or National organizations or committees (SAEM, CORD, ACEP, ICEP, AAEM and others)
  9. Coordination of medical student  and  resident teaching for both Clinical and Core Faculty

Encourage and support citizenship and stewardship including

  1. Participation and leadership on medical school, university committees and hospital committees
  2. Support for other departments’ success through collaboration in research and development
  3. Leadership in department planning, re-growth and identifying and managing resource needs
  4. Providing clinical faculty direction and orientation regarding innovative teaching methodologies

Provide  faculty development in the department in areas of education, research and clinical service that facilitates faculty professional growth

  1. Provide and support faculty development that will enhance the academic growth of the organizations, faculty and surgeons
  2. Build mentoring and peer support programs to advance faculty in academia
  3. Build a diverse and inclusive faculty in the department of surgery and help build a collaborative culture
  4. Complete and provide periodic faculty evaluations
  5. Provide Oversight of Faculty Appointments and Promotions

MD degree with board certification in Emergency Medicine

Eligible for licensure in the state of Illinois
