This position directs and implements the operations and services for student veterans at UIC. Primary responsibilities include coordinating the federal certification process of educational benefits for student veterans. This position leads efforts to develop and establish tools and techniques to analyze the impact of programming on veteran student retention.

  • Oversee operational and personnel functions related to Student Veterans Affairs.
  • Supervise, train, and development of staff.
  • Define short and long-term plans to complement the university mission and goals.
  • Provide strategic direction based upon best practice and research.
  • Collaborate with other departments to examine questions that address the development of veteran students.
  • Identify and develop collaborations and partnerships with federal, state, and community agencies to augment the services provided by the university.
  • Develop and implement veteran activities and events including new student orientations and educational presentations on and off-campus.
  • Develop and expand student veterans’ activities to facilitate the transition from the military to the campus community.
  • Serve as a campus resource for educating students, faculty, and staff on issues related to veteran student success.
  • Oversee the Cisar Student Veteran Center including the development and of operational procedures of the center.
  • Serve as the institution’s Certifying Official.
  • Direct and monitor the evaluation and verification of student eligibility in accordance with the Department of Veterans Affairs guidelines.
  • Remain knowledgeable about proposed and enacted federal legislation that veterans’ educational programs.
  • Interpret and ensures compliance of federal and state regulations and legislation.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. 
  • A Master’s Degree in higher in higher education administration, counseling psychology, social work, or related field required.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a higher education setting including veteran affairs, student financial aid or related area.
  • Previous supervisory experience required.
  • Some knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
  • Effective leadership, managerial, communication, and consulting skills are preferred.
  • Knowledge of issues, best practices, current research, and innovations in assessment of student veteran services.
  • A strong interest in serving a diverse student population preferred.
  • Military experience is preferred.
