Under the direction of the Physician, performs a variety of clinical and clerical services to support physician practice in an outpatient setting to provide support to the kidney transplant coordinators. 
 

A Certified Medical Assistant typically performs the following duties per healthcare facility protocols (federal, state and university) and specific duties assigned-

• Obtain clinical information needed to accurately perform a transplant evaluation, initiating routine evaluation testing of candidates following consult appointment.
• Maintain current demographic and other medical information on patients in the evaluation process and awaiting transplantation.
• Maintains medical records in Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems, reviews and prepares EHR to ensure completeness prior to patient appointment, obtains missing documentation; documents medical visits, observations, and related activities
• Facilitate smooth and efficient department operations and communications.
• Manage multiple simultaneous requests from Transplant Coordinators.
• Triage patient calls; accurately relay symptoms and/or complaints to the Transplant Coordinator/RN in a time frame appropriate to the situation.
• Schedule testing as needed.
• Assist patient with coordination of appointments to aid in the timely completion of their transplant evaluation.
• Update transplant system as needed with meeting minutes
• Confirm, notify and remind patients of appointment and/or changes.
• Resolve any patient concerns or problems that require immediate response or report problems to Transplant Coordinator/RN
• Assist in developing new procedures within the clinic or special program setting.
• Assist with presentation at weekly evaluation meetings
• Identify and help resolve operating problems related to patient flow, work coordination, appointment scheduling, medical records, etc.
• Coding and processing of patient accounts.

B.  Direct Patient Care Tasks


1.  Assists nursing/medical staff with tasks related to preliminary assessment, education, and documentation of patient condition and the presenting health complaint including: Obtaining vital signs and other pertinent health information, administration of basic tests as by healthcare provider such as EKG, spirometry, pulse oximetry, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments {CLIA), etc. .Informing the patient of test preparations and directions to diagnostic/treatment areas.

2. Assists medical/nursing staff with tasks or diagnostic/therapeutic procedures appropriate to experience, training and skill level.

3. Administers approved injections per appropriate protocol

A. Education/Experience
1.  High school graduation or equivalent.

2. Possession of a current/valid certification as a Certified Medical  Assistant by an approved  certifying board as  defined by the employing institution.

3.  The two accepted  certifying boards  are: the  American  Association  of Medical  Assistants and the  National
 Center for Competency Testing

4.  Current valid American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification

5. Previous experience in an Ambulatory Care clinical setting preferred.

6. Previous experience working with Transplant patients preferred
