The Chair of the Department shall have directorship of the Department of Surgery and Surgical Specialties to supervise all educational, research and service activities of the Department, while representing the Department to other units and divisions of the College, the University and with the Community.

The Rockford campus is community-based, and requires commitment to the educational programs, research agendas, and service related to community-defined needs, often focused on rural and underrepresented minority populations. The Chair will work closely with other units on interprofessional activities.

• Provide leadership in developing new and refining existing programs to assure quality in meeting the clinical and educational commitments of the Department.

• Oversee and coordinate the clinical, educational and research activities of the Department and be responsible to the Regional Dean of the College of Medicine Rockford.

• Recruit, advise and develop high-quality faculty, encourage research, curriculum development and other scholarly activities.

• Actively participate and represent the College of Medicine in the appropriate scientific and educational organizations of peers and colleagues dedicated to advancing medical education.

• Maintain a visible presence in the community representing the Department and the College as a resource to the public media, interest groups and in public service.

• Be responsible for the Departmental budgets and, in consultation with appropriate committees, all Departmental staff, the allocation of facilities, the care and distribution of Departmental property and the expenditure of Departmental funds.

• Interact with other department heads/chairs to facilitate inter-departmental programs involving other clinical disciplines and other health professions within this College and internationally.

• Consult annually with and counsel each faculty member of the Department regarding the nature and scope of his/her work, academic and professional development and career goals.

• Serve as a member of committees of the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford, the College of Medicine, the University, and committees in the community, as appropriate.

• Maintain clinical acumen and be involved in patient care and clinical teaching.

• Work with other disciplines and units in promotion of interprofessional education and research as well as community-based education, research, and service to effectively serve local community. 

  • MD/DO Degree or its foreign equivalent. Board Certified in Surgery or a surgical sub-speciality.
  • Able to meet requirements for medical licensure in the state of Illinois.
  • Teaching: The Chair must be experienced in clinical teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Administration: The Chair must have demonstrated experience and skills in leadership and knowledge of the healthcare environment.
