The Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) primary purposes are to promote academic integrity, to promote institutional control of intercollegiate athletics, to facilitate the integration of the athletics and academic components of the collegiate community, and to enhance the student-athlete experience.  The FAR ensures that the institution establishes and maintains the appropriate balance between academic and intercollegiate athletics. 

The FAR serves as the Chair of the Chancellor’s Athletic Advisory Committee (CAAC) and an advisor to the Chancellor on matters pertaining to intercollegiate athletics.

 

  • Develop familiarity with programs, practices and strategic plans of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics designed to assure the academic integrity of the athletics program and to promote the welfare of student-athletes.
  • Develop knowledge of institutional, Horizon League, and NCAA requirements for academic eligibility for competition/practice, financial aid, and intercollegiate competition.
  • Develop familiarity with the academic credentials of entering student-athletes (NCAA Eligibility Center), the academic progress of continuing student athletes, and graduation rates.
  • Review of periodic reports on the academic preparation and performance of student-athletes for each sports team
  • Review and provide input of On Time Demands of student-athletes, including excused missed class time due to travel requirements.
  • Review of the variety and effectiveness of academic services available to student-athletes
  • Participate in events involving student-athletes on a regular basis.  Student-athletes should recognize the FAR as a source of information, support, encouragement, and referral
  • Serve as chair of the Chancellor’s Athletic Advisory Committee (CAAC), an advisory committee comprised of internal and external members to advance athletics' mission and outreach.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience and to offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses.
  • Consult and collaborate with the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
  • Review and approve of NCAA waiver, appeals, and other documents as needed
  • Review and provide oversight of senior student-athletes exit interviews
  • Provide oversight of yearly NCAA recruiting exam for all coaches
  • Participate in Horizon League FARs meetings and provide input on decisions of league policy and/or regulations
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

 

 

 

PhD or other terminal degree required and must be full-time faculty, with a strong interest in athletics. 

Previous experience in collegiate athletics is preferred. 

Working Conditions:

Required travel to off-campus Horizon League and NCAA meetings, as necessary.
