Bridge to the Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate - Chemistry (Job ID #125231)
LAS/Chemistry
Postdoc Res Assoc
Chicago
01/17/2020

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a Bridge to the Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate in either analytical or experimental physical chemistry, to be served in UIC’s Department of Chemistry beginning August 16, 2020.

Program Goals: The Bridge to the Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate program seeks to advance diversity on the permanent faculty level by encouraging the recruitment, retention, and promotion of outstanding scholars from different backgrounds, with an emphasis on attracting individuals from groups who have been historically underrepresented in science. The determined goal of this program is to recruit, mentor, and support the transition of outstanding candidates from postdoctoral assignments to research active, tenure track faculty members. UIC strongly encourages applications from individuals who have demonstrated a background and/or record of scholarship that will best support UIC’s diverse student body. UIC is among the nation’s top five most diverse campuses and is designated both a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). UIC is located in downtown Chicago and is a comprehensive, urban, public, Research 1 university with access to state-of-the-art research facilities. Information about the Department of Chemistry can be found at chem.uic.edu.

Research Areas: The ideal candidate’s research will be focussed on bioinformatics, chemometrics, machine learning, materials discovery, and/or the development or application of new spectroscopic probes of matter. These are areas in which the Department of Chemistry can provide mentoring as well as considerable local experimental and computational resources. Potential areas of interest include, but are not limited to: quantum information, catalysis, discovery of new materials for energy applications, X-ray or ultrafast spectroscopy, X-ray or electron microscopy for materials characterization, statistical analysis of large chemical datasets (i.e., from microscopy or “Omics” methods), data mining for the discovery of novel materials, and machine learning applied to chemistry and/or materials science. A successful candidate will work with established UIC faculty to develop an independent and competitive research program that would make them attractive for conversion to an open UIC tenure track faculty position in the Department after two years.

Candidate Qualifications and Duties: Candidates must have received a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field no earlier than August 16, 2016 and no later than August 16, 2020. Qualified candidates must be legally eligible for employment in the United States. This position is not eligible for Visa Sponsorship. Candidates who have served in at least one prior postdoctoral position are preferred. Teaching duties will be a total of only one semester of an established undergraduate course in an anticipated two year postdoctoral term, with no other required teaching. Research duties will include both publishable research and the preparation of a detailed research plan that will be used to apply for a position as a tenure track assistant professor in the Department that would start in August 2022. Service duties will be confined to working with established underrepresented undergraduate communities on campus.

To apply: Applicants should submit an online application and additional materials to https://jobs.uic.edu. Applications must include a cover letter and 1) the candidate’s research plan, 2) a description of how they will help UIC meet its goal of a diverse faculty and student body, 3) the candidate’s curriculum vitae, and 4) the names of two researchers who can provide letters of recommendation upon request. All materials must be submitted by January 17, 2020. Questions about this position can be sent to Prof. Luke Hanley, LHanley@uic.edu.

UIC is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action employer. Minorities, women, veterans and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply. UIC will conduct background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and these are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
