Police Telecommunicators receive, interpret and process calls regarding emergency and non-emergency situations to appropriate and/or supporting agencies that includes: UIH Hospital Security, University Police, University Facilities, Fire/EMS and Chicago Police Department. Police Telecommunicators work under general supervision of higher level personnel.
 
 

50%:   Receives and interprets in-coming calls regarding complaints, inquiries and reports of emergency and non-emergency situations: logs, coordinates, disseminates and maintains records of messages.

25%:  Operate and monitor access control system, surveillance videos, public safety app and the University fire/security alarm system; dispatches firefighters or police officers as necessary or dispatch police, fire/EMS as necessary.

10%:  Creation, modification, and cancellation of LEADS files.

5%:  May notify of local weather warning system and broadcast severe weather notices as directed.

5%:  Control access to police station by requiring proper identification for visitors.

5%:  Performs related duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

1. No record of conviction of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.

2. High School graduation or GED. (HS diploma, GED certificate or College Transcript must be uploaded)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

1-2 years of experience in a call center environment or a high stress environment working with the public.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • English Language – Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Telecommunications - Knowledge of transmitting on and the operation of telecommunications systems.
  • Geography – Knowledge of principles and methods for describing the features of natural and man-made locations including their physical characteristics, locations, and interrelationships.
  • Public Safety and Security – Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Law and Government – Knowledge of law enforcement, emergency services, and legal terminology.
  • Working knowledge of National Incident Management System (NIMS) and / or Incident Management Systems (ICS).

SKILLS:

  • Customer and Personal Service -  Demonstrates the ability to provide customer and personal services through executing needs assessment and meeting quality standards for service.
  • Clerical/Computers and Electronics – Demonstrates the ability to operate computer hardware and software, including applications and programs, as well as managing files and records.
  • Oral Comprehension – Understands information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

ABILITIES:

  • Reading Comprehension – Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Oral Expression – Communicates information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
  • Speech Clarity – Speaks clearly so others can understand you.
  • Speech Recognition – The ability to identify and understand the speech of another person.
  • Ability to work under stress and exercise sound judgment in emergency situations, adjusting quickly to changing situations required.
  • Deductive Reasoning – The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
  • Inductive Reasoning – The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).
  • Information Ordering – The ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules.
  • Active Learning – Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
