Job Summary:

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services is seeking an experienced Public Information Specialist (Marketing / Outreach Manager).

The Public Information Specialist (Marketing / Outreach Manager) supports and promotes the goals of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services through message development shared with students, faculty, staff and external stakeholders.  The Public Information Specialist will use multimedia/multimodal strategies to reach the target audience effectively and efficiently. The Public Information Specialist will work with Facilities Management, the Office of Sustainability, Environmental Health and Safety, Capital Programs, Campus Parking, UIC Police, Mail Services and Transportation.

The position will engage with the University Office of Public Affairs to ensure messages and communications are consistent with University messaging strategies.

Key Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Monitor and ensure that all construction projects, renovations, repairs, emergency events (Floods, fire, loss of power) and special events are communicated to the campus community and if appropriate, external stakeholders, with appropriate messaging and when appropriate on site signage. Update messaging as necessary.
  • Oversee all creative input for the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services, which includes all communications and publications.
  • Deliver creative content for all media that resonates with the campus community and external stakeholders that supports the various campaigns, events and announcements of Administrative Services.
  • Research audience preferences, discover current trends, develop, and consolidate strong media ties to confirm widespread outreach to campus, public, community and business partners.
  • Maintain social media platforms including Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and other relevant platforms. Stay up-to-date with changes in all social platforms ensuring maximum effectiveness. 
  • Produce and manage material, on behalf of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services, for Social networking websites.
  • Develop, maintain and manage relations with external audiences, media as well as non-media to convey required messages for Administrative Services
  • Write Capital Project and renovation project announcements and updates. Announcements are made using campus media, including email, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and other relevant platforms communications
  • Host the Administrative Services website and upgrade content regularly. Develop an optimal posting schedule, considering web traffic and customer engagement metrics.
  • Responsible for the preparation and administration of the media budget for Administrative Services,
  • Assist in supporting Administrative Services as well as UIC’s goals through participating in the overall development and execution of communication tactics and strategies.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications Required:

1.             Any combination totaling four (4) years (48 months) from the following categories:

A.            work experience in public relations, newspaper reporting, writing and editing (journalism), radio/television broadcasting with emphasis on production, social media communication, or web/digital media

B.            college course work in journalism, communications, radio/television broadcasting, web/digital media, liberal arts, social media communication or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:

  • 60 semester hours/Associate’s degree equals two (2) years (24 months)
  • 90 semester hours equals three (3) years (36 months)
  • 120 semester hours/ Bachelor’s degree equals four (4) years (48 months)
  • Master’s degree equals four (4) years (48 months)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated familiarity and knowledge of the media market most influenced by UIC. Knowledge of the local newspapers, radio and television stations as well as internet providers that will serve as conduits for delivering messages to the campus stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and solve problems quickly and effectively using the appropriate communications tools.
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism or a related field
  • A minimum of two years of experience in communication strategy development as well as two years of experience preparing press releases, social media outreach and similar media tools
