Postdoctoral Research Associate - Physics (Job ID #146655)
Liberal Arts and Sciences
Postdoc Res Assoc
Chicago
06/25/2021

The UIC Nanoscale Physics Group led by Professor Robert Klie in collaboration with the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR) at Argonne National Laboratory  has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research associate to work on structural and electro-chemical characterization of multi-valent battery cathodes. In particular, the research in Professor Klie’s group will focus on developing and utilizing a novel in-situ electro-chemical cell for analytical, aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. This project will involve close collaboration with experimental and modeling groups at Argonne National Laboratory and other collaborators within JCESR.

The candidate will be responsible for designing and executing the in-situ electro-chemical experiments using a newly designed liquid-cell electro-chemistry TEM holder. The multi-valent cathodes to be studied are developed for Mg or Ca intercalation, and will be characterized using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy at UIC. The Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) will be available for correlative X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy measurements in collaboration with the JCESR team . ANL is approximately 20 miles from the UIC campus, and the successful candidate is expected to visit the ANL regularly for experiments and meetings with JCESR collaborators.

The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in Physics, Materials Science or a closely related area by the time of the appointment. The candidate should have experience in battery and electro-chemistry research. Experience with Transmission Electron Microscopy will be a plus.

To apply, please submit a CV, statement of research interest and experience, and the names and email addresses of three references by June 25, 2021.
