A Postdoc Research Associate position is available in the Department of Ophthalmology at The University of Illinois at Chicago. The laboratory group has a basic and translational research program that studies peptide therapeutics and stem cell biology. The assays used include primary cell line culture, iPS culture, organotypic culture, genomics assays, expression analysis, western blotting, high throughput screening, high content analysis, drug screens, small animal clinical models, protein-protein interactions among others. This position will involve scientific/experimental responsibilities, in addition to laboratory management, administrative duties, purchasing, budgeting, grant and report writing, regulatory (e.g. biosafety, IRB, IACUC) protocol drafting and maintenance, regulation compliance, organization of group data, files and budgets.  Additional responsibilities include appointment and meeting scheduling/calendar and travel management, conference organization, correspondence and communication with researchers and clinical providers as well as patients.

  • Collaborate with Principal Investigator to conduct the assigned experiments.  
  • Maintain cell lines, perform in vitro and in vivo experimentation
  • Manage grant budgets, reports, drafts, and compliance documentation
  • Meeting, conference, travel, calendar management
  • Communicate with patients, health care providers, collaborators in a professional, HIPAA compliant, and reliable manner
  • Perform procedures related to characterization and potency assays in cell culture and in rodents including pre- and post-operative animal handling as well as administration of anesthetics, analgesics, antibiotics and other test items to rodents.
  • Perform ophthalmological evaluations in rodents before and after procedures
  • Analysis of clinical and experimental images 
  • Monitor project developments on an ongoing basis. Propose and implement changes as needed. 
  • Prepare and write scientific findings and works for publications in peer-reviewed journals, and present findings and works at scientific meetings. 
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and maintain research records.
  • Assist the Principal Investigator, project collaborators, and other personnel with research and educational activities. 
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Doctoral degree or experience in cell or molecular biology, immunology, genetics, or related fields required.  Experience with lab management, grant management, report generation and application.

Self-motivated, reliable, organized, production oriented and creative individuals with a strong interest in ophthalmic research and drug development are encouraged to apply.

Individuals with prior experience with high-throughput analysis, protein structural biology, immunostaining/fluorescence, epigenetics, mouse/rat/rabbit work, ocular models of disease, small animal surgery, cell culture, cell signaling, and biostatistics/bioinformatics are strongly desired.

Strong writing skills are required. Preferred candidates will have experience in clinical research and patient coordination as well.  HIPAA familiarity and information safety experience is desired as is facility with electronic medical records, medical language literacy, and REDCap.
