The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant for the Mile Square School Based Health Center. Under the direction and supervision of the APN site coordinator or qualified designee, performs a variety of clinical and clerical tasks in a school-based health center or other outpatient setting. The Certified Medical Assistant retrieves patient data (demographics, health history, reason for visit, etc.), administers tests, collects specimens, and assists the Nursing staff or Provider in the exam room.  The Certified Medical Assistant also relays relevant information to the patient, provides follow-up, and ensures patient medical records are accurate and complete.

Contract positions are positions where work is performed away from the main campus location. The Mile Square School Based Health Center – School Based Administration will be filling the position listed at the following location:

            Davis Elementary Health & Wellness Center

  • Greet patient upon arrival; ensure patient medical records/chart are accurate, updated, and available to the provider; escort or arrange to have patient escorted to the appropriate exam/treatment room.
  • Respond to patient inquiries providing factual information via phone/in person; obtain patient information regarding illness and health problems; and relay information as appropriate for disposition of the patient
  • Measure and record patient’s blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, personal data in medical chart.
  • Assist in the collection of patient specimens and processing to appropriate laboratory providing necessary follow-up work as needed.  Complete requisitions or forms for laboratory tests and procedures, such as x-ray, EKG, blood exams, and urinalysis or for referrals to specialty.  Administer vaccines, tests (Phlebotomy), and medications as indicated. 
  • Dispatch messages to other departments and make appointments for patients requiring services in other departments; initiate follow up communication for tests or procedures as directed
  • Clean and sterilize equipment and supplies using germicides and/or sterilizer; collect and bag soiled linen in exam room; and perform quality control tests and point of care testing as assigned on unit equipment
  • Maintain patient files and medical records, document laboratory data, and compile periodic statistical reports for analysis as needed.
  • Perform front-end clerical work such as pre-registering patients, scheduling appointments, and documenting and verifying patient’s insurance data
  • Perform other related duties and/or projects as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school graduation or equivalent
  2. Possession of a current/valid certification as a Certified Medical Assistant by American Association of Medical Assistant (AAMA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  3. Current CPR card

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Flexibility to float to all School Based Health Center sites as needed; ability to work with diverse population
  • Two to Three (2-3) years of clinical outpatient experience
  • Excellent phlebotomy experience
  • Flexibility to work occasional Saturdays and overtime
  • Community, ambulatory clinic or school experience.
