RN Duties

Employees at this level are responsible for developing and supervising the nursing service of one or more nursing units in the in-patient and/or out-patient departments. They work under administrative supervision from a designated supervisor.

A(n) Administrative Nurse III typically -
 

  1. maintains general supervision of the care given to patients and of nursing activities within the unit.
  2. plans for effective administration in each unit and, in consultation with medical staff, for improved patient care.
  3. plans for and participates in the training and development of assigned nursing personnel.
  4. assists in the instruction of patients.
  5. coordinates the services rendered by other professional personnel with those of the nursing personnel.
  6. keeps the nursing service administration informed of the needs of the nursing units and of any special problems.
  7. secures supplies and equipment and oversees their use and care.
  8. inspects physical facilities for orderliness, cleanliness, and safety.
  9. keeps necessary records.
  10. evaluates performance of nursing personnel and counsels them as required.
  11. performs other related duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities

Professional/Leadership

Motivates and manages nurses, technicians, and other healthcare workers

Manages the unit/service line’s day-to-day clinical operations, including practice standards, staffing, budgets, fiscal management, and quality improvement

Develops and implements action plans to improve staff development

Acts as a professional leadership role model

Manages, plans, and monitors unit/service line activities

Hires, evaluates, and counsels unit/service line personnel

Utilizes NPAS and Kronos systems to facilitate optimal staffing, scheduling, and patient assignments

Manages and controls unit/service line expenditures within establish budgets

Communicates effectively and maintains confidentiality with patients/families, medical staff, nursing staff and interdepartmental staff

Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others, coworkers, community, and the nursing profession

Promotes and supports Shared Leadership as the selected method of nursing governance

Promotes collaboration between coworkers, all members of the health care team as well as patients, their families, and significant others

Demonstrates the highest level of customer service to internal and external customers

Communicates in an effective and professional manner to reach conflict resolution

Actively participates in Medical Center communication processes through timely review and response to electronic and written messages

Organizational

Adheres to and enforce the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct.

Treats patients/families, staff, students and visitors with respect and dignity.

Adheres to and enforces Nursing’s time, overtime, and attendance policies.

Completes electronic learning modules and related programs as assigned by Medical Center Learning by established date

Complies with University Health Services TB and fit-testing requirements

Initiates resolution of patient care problems utilizing established communication channels/chain of command

Resolves recurring clinical practice and/or related unit problems and participates in problem solving and resolution utilizing established communication channels/chain of command

Education/Research

Facilitates the planning, presenting, and evaluating of learning/educational experiences for staff and students

Serves as resource to other nursing staff and students

In collaboration with Staff Nurse II directs unit-based quality initiatives and provides feedback and education to staff

Encourages and supports nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts conducted on the unit and in the Medical Center

Responsible for continued professional growth/development by identification of learning needs and initiates strategies to meet such needs

 

  1. Current Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
    1. Three years of professional nursing experience.
      OR
    2. Two years of professional nursing experience and one year of related advanced education
  2. Graduate of an Accredited nursing program
  3. Bachelor's degree preferred (BSN preferred)
  4. Master's Degree preferred in Nursing, Hospital Administration, Public Health, or Business
  5. Current AHA BLA/CPR and other required unit-specific certifications
  6. Previous management experience preferred
  7. Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, families, and staff
  8. Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in Epic with on-the-job training
  9. Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
  10. Schedule: 1pm-9pm with occasional weekend coverage
