The Nursing Care Technician (NCT) works under the direct supervision of the registered nurse in accordance with the standards of practice, within the guidelines of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act and the mission and philosophy of University of Illinois Health. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Nursing Technician delivers patient care utilizing the Relationship-Based Care model as a framework. The Nurse Technician provides care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by supporting Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence in clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Nurse Technician functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals.

Clinical

  • Provides general patient care duties as directed by the registered nurse.
  • Performs tasks related to sterility with an understanding of sterile technique.
  • Performs tasks related to pre-operative preparation.
  • Performs tasks related to intra-operative support.
  • Performs unit secretary (US) duties as assigned. The Unit Secretary serves to facilitate unit operations through accurate oversight and effective management of patients' medical records (electronic and non-electronic), coordination of services, supplies and the appropriate transcription of written orders.
  • Patient care support functions
  • Completes the “Core Skills Assessment” upon hire.
  • Sets up patients’ rooms
  • Sets up and complies with isolation precautions
  • Complies with UI Health infection control guidelines
  • Introduces self to the patient and family, provides patients with admission/information pack, and provides
  • assistance as needed while using AIDET
  • Assists with patient discharge as assigned, ensuring that all patient belongings go with the patient
  • Responds to patient call lights
  • Assists with measuring and records vital signs, notifies RN of any abnormalities/changes in when needed
  • Maintains falls precautions
  • Assists RN with Inspecting patient’s skin
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Professional/Leadership

  • Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others and the community.
  • Participates in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior.
  • Demonstrates accountability for job performance by seeking opportunities to enhance job skills and knowledge.
  • Maintains conditions of employment (Nurse Assistant Certificate, BLS and other required unit-specific requirements).

 

Organizational

  • Adheres to the UI Health’s Code of Conduct.
  • Treats patients/families, staff, students and visitors with respect and dignity.
  • Adheres to Nursing’s time, overtime and attendance policies.
  • Completes electronic learning modules and related programs as assigned by UI Health by established date
  • Complies with University Health Services TB and fit-testing requirements
  • Utilizes established communication channels/chain of command to escalate or resolve patient care problems.
  • Identifies recurring clinical practice and/or related unit problems and participates in problem solving and resolution.

 

Education/Research

  • Collaborates with other staff to identify, promote and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students
  • Serves as a resource to other nursing staff and students
  • Accesses Medical Center intranet/outlook for relevant communication and to review and interpret changes in policy, procedure and other information pertinent to practice
  • Supports nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts conducted on the unit and at UI Health.
  • Takes responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identification of learning needs and initiates strategies to meet such needs.

Four (4) Positions Available: 

 

High school graduation or equivalent

 

Possession of a CNA license from an accredited institution/school/program. Illinois Department of Public Health – Health Care Work Registry - http://www.idph.state.il.us/nar/cnafacts.htm

 

Current AHA BLS/CPR and Other unit-specific certifications required.

 

Basic computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record with on-the-job training.

Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required. 

Schedule: 40hr/wk Mon- Fri 6:30 am - 3:00 pm
