The University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics (UI Health) is seeking an Senior Pathologist Assistant.   This position is engaged in all phases of gross description and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens, and human postmortem examinations. Provides instruction to residents; and supervises Pathologists Assistants.

Gross Description and Dissection

• Perform and dictate gross examination of biopsies and surgical specimens.
• Perform grossing of nearly all biopsy specimens and as requested, assist residents in the grossing of surgical specimens. Instruct residents in methods of gross examination.
• Supervise the grossing and autopsy rooms for compliance with environmental and biological hazards.
• Oversee the proper stocking of grossing and autopsy rooms with necessary tools and materials.
• Supervise the records of surgical pathology specimen dissections and dictation; labels and stores gross tissue specimens.
• Procure and process specimens for tissue banking purposes.
• Human Postmortem Examinations
• Perform autopsies, including pre- and post-preparation of the bodies along with residents and faculty members. Perform eviscerations, gross anatomic dissection, and obtain appropriate sections for microscopic examination; train staff interns and residents in techniques and procedures.
• Remove organs, portions of bone, or other samples of tissues for any specialized study or research; collect special materials for decalcification and for toxicological, viral and bacteriological assays.
• Oversee the maintenance of records; files x-rays; maintain facilities; labels and stores gross tissue obtained during autopsy.
• Photograph specimen samples as appropriate for use in instruction and documentation. Maintain complete and accurate records of all gross photographs

Student Instruction/ Staff Management

• Teach pathologist assistant students.
• Write, document and maintain departmental procedures.
• Plan, assign and review work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met. Hire, train, develop and manage staff including those who assist in specimen receiving, gross room, frozen section and autopsy areas to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.

• Master of Health Science in Pathologists' Assistant or Master of Science in Pathologists' Assistant and certification as a Pathologists Assistant are required.
• Must have an operational knowledge of the systems currently interfaced with Sunquest and Pathnet. This currently includes Patient Management, Gemini, Medipac, the UICMC network and Winstation software.
