UI Health is seeking to hire an Assistant Director, Advanced Practice Providers – Department of Environmental & Occupation Medicine. The Assistant Director, Advanced Practice Provider, provides administrative oversight and support to Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) practice within the Department of Environmental & Occupation Medicine within the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System. Establishes relationships and partnership with Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), Physician Assistants (PAs), physicians, medical directors, division chiefs and department leadership to support and improve the practice, quality and outcomes of clinical care and regulatory compliance. Functions as a lead in the clinical practice, orientation, competency validation and professional development of the APPs within the Department of Environmental & Occupation Medicine.

Operational Responsibilities: Works with APPs and divisional leadership to achieve organizational and division goals and objectives.

Practice Analysis: Serves as an expert resource in the utilization of APPs within the area of care delivery. Identifies new and existing best practice initiatives, collaborates in the determination of competency metrics, collaborates in assessing financial productivity and participates in clinical outcome data assessment and analysis.

Hiring/Orientation: Participates in and leads the onboarding of APPs within the Department of Environmental & Occupation Medicine. Works in collaboration with the Director of Advanced Practice Providers and department/divisional leadership to maintain documentation related to orientation, continued competency validation and credentialing and privileging.

Financial: Serves as a resource for appropriate APP billing. Assists in identifying benchmarks to evaluate billable and non-billable APP performance. Works with billing/coding and EMR specialists to determine metrics for productivity and evaluation of patient care by APP providers. Manages schedule, staffing plan and the assigned area. Collaborates with department/divisional leadership in the development of annual operational and capital budgets.

Scope of Practice: Works within the Bylaws of the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System and in adherence to hospital and department/divisional policy to ensure that APPs function within, and to the limits, of their scope of practice and in accordance with their delineation of privileges or collaborative practice agreement. Remains current with state law and scope of practice in the State of Illinois. Leads and/or participates in research activities related to nursing clinical practice. Fosters an environment that supports research-related activities and continual performance improvement. Supports the education and preceptorship of APP and nursing students.

Professional Development: Serves as a resource and champion for professional development opportunities for APP providers and serves as a resource to departmental/divisional leadership in advancing the professional development of APP providers. Participates in department-wide initiatives to advance the professional development of APP practice within the organization.

Credentialing & Privileging: Ensures the maintenance of current credentialing and privileging of APPs. Participates in the timely and successful completion of OPPE/FPPE for all APPs within the Department of Environmental & Occupation Medicine.

Competency Evaluation: Works in collaboration with the Director of Advanced Practice Providers and departmental leadership to establish templates and checklists to ensure documentation of orientation. Works to identify metrics for initial, focused and ongoing professional performance evaluation, as well as integrated simulation and observation of technical skills. Assist in determining opportunities to increase knowledge and skills of Advanced Practice Providers. Co-responsible, along with divisional leadership, for preparation and delivery of APP yearly performance evaluations. Legislative and Health Policy Issues for APPs: Establishes relationships with key stakeholders to assess best practices and special-specific changes to APP practice. Ensures that these changes are communicated and incorporated into APP clinical practice.

Communication & Leadership: Demonstrates excellence in written and verbal communication, public speaking, presentation skills, critical thinking and decision making skills. Clearly understands the implications of situations and uses sound judgment when dealing with multiple disciplines. Demonstrates ability to facilitate group processes and achieve agreement and consensus. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment and view success in relationship to group success. Demonstrates strong analytical ability and understanding of statistical and marketing concepts. Possesses strong program development skills.

  • Graduation from accredited APRN or PA program
  • Current license as a Professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois OR current License as Physician’s Assistant in the State of Illinois is required
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice OR Masters of Medical Science in Physician Assistant is required
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required
  • Current controlled substance licensure if required by position
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between physician, APRN and PA providers as well as college and hospital leadership and the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership, multidisciplinary collaboration, interpersonal communication, education, and clinical experience and change management required.
