The University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics (UI Health) is seeking a Director, Nursing Clinical Practice. This position is responsible for the leadership of organizational and departmental initiatives and growth opportunities that impact, enhance or change clinical nursing practice at UI Health. Working with the department of Clinical Practice and Professional Development, this leader initiates, oversees or leads clinical practice and professional development opportunities and initiatives. With a goal of excellence in nursing clinical practice and the professional growth and development of our professional nursing staff at UI Health, this leader is responsible for designing, implementing and evaluating all aspects of patient care at the clinical level and developing structures and processes to support the safe delivery of quality care to patients at UI Health. This includes, but is not limited to, coordinating, delegating and supervising the care provided by nursing staff at the bedside. Oversight will include, but is not limited to, Nursing policy and procedure, Nursing orientation, Nurse Residency Program, annual and continued nursing staff education and clinical competency practice, patient education, Nursing professional recognition and professional growth of our nursing staff.

  • Design, implement, and evaluate all aspects of patient care at the clinical level.
  • Develop structures and processes to support the delivery of safe, high quality care to patients at UI Health, including, but is not limited to, coordinating, delegating and supervising the care provided by nursing staff at the bedside.
  • Provide coordination of initiatives and programs relating to the provision of clinical nursing care.
  • Integrate evidence-based practice within clinical workflows.
  • Develop a therapeutic relationship with staff, patients, families, visitors and colleagues both within the Department of Nursing and in partnership with the Department of Nursing.
  • Interpret and direct the implementation of nursing philosophy and objectives, departmental policies and procedures, and apply recognized standards of nursing care and practice.
  • Plan, select and devise nursing operations, work methods, procedures, work flow and standards for nursing professional practice, patient care and staff growth and development.
  • Establish, implement and evaluate quality of care. Plan and develop patient safety innovations and practice improvement.
  • Coordinate the implementation of shared governance initiatives throughout the organization.
  • Foster collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to optimize the delivery of safe, high quality patient care and outcomes.
  • Assign, direct and review the work of subordinate supervisors/other nursing personnel and staff. Prepare formal answers to, and recommend the adjustment of, grievances and disciplinary matters.
  • Prepare budget for assigned area or program and is responsible for adherence to approved budget.
  • Monitor and evaluate operations for compliance with licensure, accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • Determine personnel, material, equipment, and facilities needed to accomplish program goals.
  • Plan, assign and review work of staff to ensure that departmental and organizational objectives are met. Hires, trains, develops and manages staff to ensure effective resource utilization, staff competence to perform assigned responsibilities, and accountability for meeting performance targets.
  • Provide care coordination utilizing evidence based practice.
  • Maintain and monitor compliance with accreditation standards.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Illinois Registered Nursing license required.
  • Masters of Science Degree in Nursing required. APRN with Board Certification preferred.
  • A minimum of five (7) years clinical nursing experience with progressive responsibility is required. Three (5) years nursing leadership experience is preferred.
  • Strong communication, customer service and decision–making skills is required. Knowledge of budgetary processes and financial principles; knowledge of labor laws, standards of care, and regulatory standards required.
