Job Summary

The University of Illinois and Health Sciences System (UI Health) 4W Mother Baby Department is seeking a full-time Program Service Aide (Certified Laction Counselor) to join their team.

Under general supervision from a direct supervisor, Program Service Aides (Certified Lactation Counselor) is responsible for providing consultation and direct patient lactation care to patients, family members, and nursing as well as post-discharge education.

The work schedules are flex evenings and nights: 3:00pm to 11:00pm and 11:00pm to 7:00am.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Provides lactation support and assessment to the antepartum, laboring and postpartum woman which includes but is not limited to education, latch assistance, assessment of milk transfer and pumping assistance.
  • Provides lactation support and assessment to NICU patients and their parents
  • Supports the lactation consultant with planning and implementing breastfeeding promotion activities and staff education
  • Refers appropriately to the IBCLC
  • Leads breastfeeding support groups
  • Monitors and responds to patient calls and emails as appropriate
  • Assists in maintenance  and ordering of  lactation supplies and equipment
  • Is a member of  the prenatal breastfeeding class teaching team
  • Effectively communicates lactation assessment, interventions and plans to others through written and oral means.
  • Responds appropriately to requests for assistance from all inpatient and outpatient areas
  • Assists with clerical responsibilities of lactation services, as appropriate (i.e. making copies, sending emails, etc.)
  • Assists in the management and storage of human milk throughout the house
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications Required:

1. Any one or any combination of the following types of preparation:

A. credit for college course work in or closely related to the social or behavioral sciences

B. work experience and/or training that provided a knowledge of human behavior by having demonstrated through public contact the ability to cope with a variety of people, (such as complaint clerk, salesperson, or receptionist)

that totals 1.0 unit according to the following conversion rates:

  • 24 semester hours of "A" = 1.0 unit
  • 24 months of "B" = 1.0 unit

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual language skills with the ability to read, write, speak and translate Spanish/English
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Current Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), Certified Lactation Specialist (CLS), or Lactation Education Counselor (LEC)
  • Must have one of the above certifications within a month of hire
  • Excellent computer skills with Microsoft, PowerPoint, and Excel.
