Two (2) Positions Available

Under supervision performs a variety of duties and responsibilities associated with basic laboratory support functions, such as specimen processing according to policy and procedure, filing, answering telephones, result retrieval, customer service, faxing reports, order entry, log in specimens, printing reports, specimen distribution, centrifugations of specimens, operate and troubleshoot computer terminals, printers, fax and copiers, limited preventive maintenance.  Troubleshoot and problem solve order errors, mislabeled specimen, missed test, add-on’s and other specimen processing errors.   Keep work area clean and organized.  Wear PPE equipment at all times.  Be professional and courteous when interacting with internal and external customers and clients at all times. Perform other duties as assigned

Receive a wide variety of patient specimens arriving at the laboratory for testing. Following established guidelines, decide whether specimen type and quality is suitable.  Notify physician if unacceptable.

                 

Perform computer procedures for test requesting, canceling or crediting tests ordered. Verify billing information.  Prioritize and organize work.

 

Perform required procedures to process specimens: centrifuges, aliquots, etc.  Distribute samples appropriately; maintain specimen storage.

 

Answer phones for inquiries of results.  Recall data via LIS and report by phone.  Trace results not yet posted. Call STAT/critical results to clinics and units according to policy and procedure.

 

Use the laboratory computer for all functions related to testing of patient specimens: run patient and lab reports and perform other computer functions i.e. backups.

 

                        Verify and perform proper follow up for neonatal screens.

 

Perform routine maintenance procedures and function checks on laboratory centrifuges using established procedures. 

 

                                Maintain the laboratory work area so that it is organized, neat and uncluttered.

 

Refer all problems to supervisor.  Seek and obtain guidance from supervisor regarding questionable test results.

 

                                Perform other duties as assigned.

 

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER
 

    1. successful completion of a medical laboratory technician training program of 12 months duration approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association or a program approved by the institution to be served
      OR
    2. attainment of the military-enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist at the journeyman level subsequent to successful completion of an official military medical laboratory procedures course of 50 weeks duration
      OR
    3. two years of work experience and/or on-the-job training in a medical laboratory which provided a knowledge of generally accepted medical laboratory principles and practices and their applications to medical laboratory problems and was of such scope, level, and quality as to assure the applicant's overall ability to undertake entrylevel medical laboratory technician work. Such work experience and/or on-the-job training must be evaluated on the basis of its comparability to formal technician training programs like those mentioned above.1


      1 In substituting work experience and/or on-the-job training for formal training programs, as provided above, it is recommended that in order to ensure consistent application of these qualifications, the evaluation and verification of an applicant's work experience and/or on-the-job training be accomplished through the cooperative efforts of an experienced medical laboratory technician and the personnel department in a manner which will preserve the applicant's anonymity.
